Question:
Has anyone gotten pregnany after only 9-12 mos. post-op??
I recently got married and even though precautions are taken, I wanted to know if you could safely carry and deliver a healthy baby, if you get pregnant. I would love to hear from someone who has been in that situation. Thanks so much.......open RNY Oct.3rd, 03 313-185 — Donna F. (posted on May 25, 2004)

We have 2 girls in our local support group who got pregnant sooner than
that....one got pregnant 2 weeks post-op and carried her baby to term and
did very well. The other had some complications, but I am not sure that
WLS had anything to do with them, and the baby is fine now, as far as I
know.
I have heard many many stories or people having healthy babies sooner than
is recommended. There is actually a yahoo group for WLSers that are
pregnant, interested in becoming pregnant, etc. Several of them are less
than a year out and several are more than a year out.

I got pregnant at exactly 9 1/2 months po. I had surgery June 03 and got
pregnant in march 04. I lost the baby but it was NOT due to surgery. In
fact the surgery is what allowed me to become pregnant after trying for 8
years unsuccessfully. I have pcos and some other fertility issues, I was
told that I would NEVER get pregnant naturally. In fact, I had two IVF's
procedures. Well, they were WRONG, I did and I am thrilled about knowing it
can happen the old fashioned way. Although it ended on a sad note. I dont
have any regrets because my child is in Heaven and I dont need IVF anymore.
I was informed to not get pregnant for a year, but I never thought I could
so I took no precautions. My doctors and surgeon (who is chief of surgery)
were thrilled for me and found no need to worry. I took prenatal, calcium,
b12, vitamin C and I ate very healthy. I also saw my dietitian to have my
weight monitored and my blood checked regulary. I loss the baby at 8 weeks.
Again my loss was NOT due to the surgery, it was accidental. However,
please discuss with your doctor. There is another woman on the gastric
bypass pregnancy list on yahoo who was tested for preganancy before surgery
and it was negative, well guess what, the hospital test was wrong. She was
pregnant at the time she had gastric bypass surgery. I know its
unbelievable, she was pg while under the knife. she found out a few weeks
after surgery and she has recently give n birht to a helthy baby, I beleive
the baby is a healthy 6 lbs boy. She did have some minor probs and she
lost lots of weight during the pregnancy. Of course this situation is
totally different than getting pg at 9 months or even 6 for that matter.
Best Wishes.

I got pregnant at 13 months post-op, but my surgeon only requires we wait
until we are a year out, others have longer requirements. I gave birth last
Friday to a 8 lb. 4 oz. baby girl who is totally healthy. I gained about 40
pounds and have so far, at 5 days postpartem, lost 20 of them. I did not
change my diet significantly, but I was not doing a low-carb thing like
most people here do. The only change my OB made on my vitamins was to
switch me from regular multi-vit to a prenatal - I kept taking my
additional iron and calcium. Good Luck.

My friend had her surgery in April 2003 and gave birth to a healthy 7lb 7oz
baby boy on March 10,2004. She was fine and had no complications. She's
lost about 25lbs since the birth.
