Question:
7 days post-op, I had lost 23 lbs, but I ate my first
and gained 3 lbs back...Anybody know why? Should I stop "soft" foods and continue on liquid? Please help. — bubbarino (posted on April 8, 2004)

Paul -
It is very common to lose weight the first few days / weeks as you are on
liguids. The first 2 weeks I lost 50lbs but when I started on foods I only
lost 30lbs. When on liquids most of it will run through your body. What
does your doctor say on how long to stay on liguids? Mine was 3 weeks.
Don't worry about the gain, you will still lose in the end.

You ate your first what?????
Realistically, there's no way you truly gained 3 pounds. That would mean
you had to consume 10,500 more calories than your body worked off. At 7
days post-op, that's impossible. It's more than likely just water weight
and your body stabalizing after the surgery. 23 pounds in 7 days is a huge
loss. My surgeon was amazed when I lost 21 in 2 weeks. He thought it was
too much. Of course, I only lost 6 pounds over the following 4 weeks.
As for going back on liquids...no, you need to follow your docs plan which
I'm sure is a progression from liquids to pureed, soft and on to normal
foods.

Paul, are your bowels moving? I was having a problem with that, and I
gained 2.5 pounds.... took M.O.M. with no relief. Wasn't in any pain or
discomfort with it, just wasn't going. So..... doctor's office gave me a
prescription for Miralax, and after taking that for a couple of days, the
added weight came off.
Good luck!

I agree with Carolyn M. When it comes on so quickly like that, it's water
weight. watch your sodium intake also. it will cause water weight.

Paul my advice to you and STOP weighing yourself! Otherwise you will make
yourself looney. Pick a day of each week or month or every 6 weeks and
only weigh yourself at that time. Our bodies changes from day to evening
with weight due to fluids - NO WAY YOU GAINED 3 pounds from eating some
tuna and I doubt if you ate that much at only 3 weeks out.

Paul, do yourself a favor and follow the diet your surgeon recommends. If
he said liquids, or pureed, then stick with that until he says you can have
soft foods. My husband had RNY, and did very well, but after a couple of
weeks, decided he "couldn't stand" pureed food any longer. He
apparently ate something he shouldn't have, and wound up having to be
scoped, at whcih time the surgeon found debris at the place where the pouch
and intestine were joined, and an ulcer under the debris. He spent several
days being miserable and a night in the hospital for that. But he learned
his lesson! As for the weight gain, don't worry about it. Your body is
going to go crazy trying to maintain it's weight while the surgery is doing
it's job. I made myself a graph and weigh every day, and have done so from
the beginning. I personally think weighing every day keeps me honest. If I
have too many carbs - it shows up the next day and I'm back on track. Plus
it is so awesome in the beginning to watch it drop off nearly every day!
Also - take some measurements now!
