For me....extreme, terrible BAD GAS!!!!! But I still eat
sugar free candy, etc. I've stayed away from refined sugar and I'm 15
months out. I also had a bad dumping incident from sugar alcohol...(3)
pieces of Russell Stover S/F candy
on an empty stomach.

Sugar alcohols make me dump BIG time! I can't handle more than about 6-7
grams. Barb 4/07/03 235/135/130

As with the previous poster, I also get very bad PAINFUL gas from the sugar
alchohols. I cannot eat sugar free chocolate at all or look out! But
regular chocolate I have found I can eat a small piece like a few M and M's
or a Hershey's kiss, and I am fine. All I really want is just that little
taste of chocolate. I am 6 months post op RNY.

There is no real "medical" reasons to avoid SA's...there are
personal physical reasons that some people avoid them. I have no problem
with them, but I do have major trouble with glycerin. (shrug).

gas so bad I could only wish for death. (of course the smell might kill
those around me)

They make me nauseous. I can tolerate some sugar, so I prefer a little of
the real thing to satisfy my craving over the sugar alcohol version. I
personally don't like the after taste either.

I've never heard of medical reasons that they are bad for our health, but
horrific gas and cramping seem to be pretty common when eating them. I make
my own treats using fructose, Splenda, or turbinado sugar. In fact, I have
developed a whole recipe book with some unbelievable desserts. It is
available to view the index and order at www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny
or you can email me at [email protected] Good luck to you.
