Question:
having the RNY procedure done at 100 cm is this distal or proximal
also would like to know if there is a high failure rate of the rny procedure. I have seen where a few people are having a revision to DS.I know the vbg is hardly recommended. — Tguajardo (posted on March 8, 2004)

If the bypassed portion is 100cm, that's proximal. If the common channel
is 100cm, that's oh so distal, like my RNY or a DS. VERY distal.

One thing you have to be 'aware' of with the RNY is that you could have a
'stoma' problem. If your stoma doesnt work - your pouch can be rendered
useless. The ONLY way to avoid stoma problems with have a DS. (or lap band
- if you dont want malabsorbtion issues - and its ADJUSTABLE)

100 cm is still considered proximal. Anything under 150 is proximal. I
had 100 cm bypassed and have lost -133 in 10 months. I'm 10 pounds from
goal. I have a lot of loose skin, and even with the skin, I look really,
really thin. I'm probably way past goal if we take the skin into account.

In regards to the posting about stoma problems.....Some surgeons are doing
the rny and are also adding the ring at the stoma. So having the DS is not
the only way to avoid stoma problems.

I had a 100cm bypass, my doctor says that is proximal. I have lost all of
my excess weight, have no stoma problems or strictures, and can eat almost
anything (except sugar of course, I dump!) Best of luck to you. Hugs, Kim
