Question:
I am in my early 60's and scheduled for surgery in the next 4 weeks.

I have always wanted the surgery, but no had insurance coverage until now. Is there anyone out there in my age range that has had this surgery, and if so how well did it go for you.    — Barbara J. (posted on January 25, 2004)

I had my surgery 1-14-03 and I was also in my 60's. I have lost 100 pounds and have done just great. The surgery went well and recovery also. I have 30 pounds to go, but I feel like I did when I was in my 40's. The very best thing that has ever happened to me. It was a blessing. If you would like to know anything else, please let me know. Good luck and God bless..............

I was almost 55 when I had LAP-RNY on 10/8/02 and have lost 140 lbs. Had a complete belt lipectomy/abdominoplasty on 12/22/03 and am still recovering. The two best things I ever did for myself in my entire life. You will do fine. Good luck to you.

I am 66 years old and had lap RNY two weeks ago, 1-12-04. I am recuping very well, I'm out and about, went to church this morning, started walking a little. My blood sugars heave already been normal and I'm off the pills I was taking. So far, I'm happy. MJ

My mother had her surgery at 59. She will be one year post op in February and has done wonderfully! She had no complications except for having to have her gall bladder taken out- but that was no big deal. She is wearing a size 18 jeans from a 4X stretch knit!!! I am so proud of her and have been on this journey with her all the way- My surgery was in March last year and our lives are so much better! Best of luck to you!

I had open RNY two years ago at age 55 and have done extremely well. I feel more like 37 now than 57. The only problem I have is with my arthritic knees (actually knee now since I had one replaced last July). I belong to an online group for people over 50 who have had or are having or are interested in having WLS. If you will send your email address to [email protected], I'll forward it to the owner of the board so she can invite you if you wish. The board is private so you can only join by invtation. Pheebs, the owner, was over 60 when she had her surgery. Patty

My mother had lap RNY in December. She is 66. Physically she did fine and was back to work within two weeks. She could have gone back sooner but since it was the holidays she decided to wait until after the first of the year. Emotionally she has had some problems. The major change in her eating habits is hard for her but she is doing well.

I am 54 yr.old and I had lap-rny, September 16th and I am down 100 lb. I'll be honest with you. I did have a few events with my surgery. I had an awful pain in my lower back and I have to walk with a walker, now. The doctor said that my nerves were damaged and will come back eventually. My back is numb! I caught pneumonia and was given two pints of blood, because my hemoglobin dropped. I stayed in the hospital for 16 days and 6 of them were spent in rehab. I am recuperating pretty good. I was really healthy before surgery and didn't need a walker. I was using a cane, sometime. I do not have sleep apnea, but I am asthmatic. I hope I have been of some help. You can email me at [email protected] GOOD LUCK!

Hi, I was 60 when I had mine done, Oct 15 01, to say it was life changing is mild. It was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. I went back to work fulltime about 6 wks after the surgery, and was on my feet all day climbing steps. It has been over 2 years of wonderful blest. I started at 278 at 5 5 1/2 and now am at 142. I am wearing a size 8 jeans which for this Grandma of 11 is remarkable. I had a post op incision infection, and was tired the first couple of weeks,it is major surgery. Since then I have had a tt/hernia surgery, and 2 follow ups with some lipo, and touchups. I have never regretted a day of it. I still have to remind myself I cannot eat like everyone else, huge amounts, some foods bothers me, but the trade off is nothing compared to the joy of feeling good, not just healthier, but feeling so good about myself. my profile has a recent picture of our wls reunion, it was wonderful to see everyone that had gone thru the surgery the last 3 years and looked so good, if I can be of any help please e-mail me, Susie ps have to go get ready for work, still working on my feet all day, and loving life with my second chance. God bless all

Hi Barbara, I was 62 when I had my surgery,It was uncomplicated and I never felt better in my life. I wish I had done this sooner but now I feel like I'm 10 years younger. All my medication for type 2 diabetes and blood pressure are no longer neccessary. I've lost 65 lbs in 10 weeks and feeling great. Good luck to you on this journey. Pat

I was 65 1/2 when I had mine and have done great. Been sick to stomach a few times but mostly because I did not chew my food well and when it came up there would be a chunk or so. I will be 4 months on Thursday and as of today down 83 pounds. Hospital stay was 2 days. Lap RNY 9/29/03 315/232

My mother-in-law had surgery 2 days before her 65th birthday. It has been 7 mos and she is down 100lbs. In Dec she finally had a long awaited hip replacement surgery. She has ditched her walker and now wlaks with a cane. She was told that when she loses another 75lbs she can ditch the cane :-) The only problem she had was early on, she didn't drink enough. She's fine now. Her BMI was well over 60
