Question:
Wine pre-op. How long before WLS should you stop drinking wine?
My surgeon canceled my surgery because I was drinking 3 glasses of wine on Friday nights. I quit 3 weeks before surgery and he canceled me. I was shocked to say the least. — Cynthia A. (posted on November 23, 2003)

Did he warn you to stop drinking or he would cancel the surgery? Did you
have a psych consult where this history of drinking on the weekends
(according to your profile) was discussed? Did he cancel it altogether or
just postpone it indefnitely? Why don't you ask your surgeon how long he
wants you to be off alcohol pre-op before you have the surgery? JR

No my surgeon never told me anything about drinking wine. I have been
going to a psychologist for a while now and the wine has never came up. I
never thought of it as an issue with me.

Cynthia,
I don't see where it says anything about you drinking. I can only access
your personal comments.
How did this come about anyway - I mean the subject of drinking

I'm guessing that you were scheduled for the Bariatric Treatment Center. I
went there (in Groveport Ohio) and I don't recall any specific instructions
regarding alcohol. Did the subject come up in you PAT's?. BTC gives a lot
of paperwork prior to surgery. Go through the info provided and see if it
mentions anything about alcohol. If it doesn't, I would seriously wonder
why this is an issue at this point.

Wine works like a blood thinner and can mix with other medications.
HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!! It will pass from your system in about 24 hours, so I
cannot understand how the surgeon would think a few glasses of wine 3 weeks
before surgery is harmful. I'd call him and demand an explanation.

Nothing matters now. Dr. Rogers said I can not have the surgery at BTC. I
have been doing test after test for the last 7 months and 2 weeks before
surgery they take my life away. I have no hope now.

My comments on the poster's drinking were made from reading her profile,
which she has subsequently decided to take private. Of course, this is her
decision, but it does make it harder for us to help her...JR

We dont know the specifics but if a patient is a active alcoholic the RNY
will cause them to completely self destruct. Our psych doc says its a major
cause for surgery non approval. Our support group had a postie stand up and
tell a sad story of what occured when she began abusing. DUI, lost drivers
license, nearly lost marriage with affair. This is a major hazard of the
RNY.

Cynthia, I had Dr Rogers for my surgery and I dont recall him ever saying
anything about alcohol. Three glasses of wine once a week shouldnt have
been an issue. Id get an explanation if I were you and ask why he never
mentioned this before you did all of this testing. If you cant go to BTC
in Ypsi maybe you can go to CORI center (in Warren I think) or go to Hurley
in Flint. Sorry this happened to you. Good Luck!

I had surgery at BTC and I think I recall being told to discontinue
alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen 1 month prior to surgery. The ibuprofen was the
worst as I had sever achilles tendonitis that hurt every single day of my
life, almost crippling. I decided it was short term pain for long term
"gain" or loss as in my case losing was winning! It was hard but
I wanted to have surgery more than i wanted ibuprofen. Have never been much
of a drinker so the alcohol restriction was no sacrifice at all.
