Question:
Even though I started at 275 pounds before surgery (at 5'9
lower heart rate of about 60 resting. I have noticed over the last several days that my heart rate is much lower than that. I have checked a few times and it is around 42 beats a minute. I am 6 weeks post-op and down to 231 pounds as of this morning. Should I be concerned or is this just normal for post-ops? — tntwildlife77 (posted on November 17, 2003)

Typically a good resting heart rate should be about 50 to 100 beats per
minute, although 50 to 70 is ideal :>) If you are exercising a lot it
can lower your rate into the 40's without much concern. To determine your
resting heart-rate, it's best to do this in bed before you get up in the
morning. Do it for five days and then add all the totals together and
divide by five. This will give you your average resting heart rate. Mine
has went down considerable from 100+ bpm to 60ish on an average. If it
drops ANY lower OR you remain concerned OR this is accompanied by extreme
fatigue or a general over-all feeling of yuck (don't ya love technical
terms haha), then please, see your PCP!

After surgery my heart rate was significantly lower. That lasted for about
2 to 3 months. Then it gradually increased. There is nothing to worry
about. The same thing happens with you are ill and the body is healing.
Your body is still healing so it is using most of your energy to heal the
body first. Hope this helps!

At my last doctors appointment my resting heart rate was 41, my doc said it
was low (but historically it been below 55) he said unless its causing
tiredness dizziness or things like that it should be fine. He noted
marathon runners often have rates like this, although I'm no marathon
runner its nice to think weight lose and exercise is doing good things for
the heart. Concern can always be helped with a phone call to the doc, take
care
