Question:
Does anyone know of an insurance policy that I can buy that will cover WLS?
The insurance I have does not cover WLS for ANY reason, so I am at a standstill. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. I am asking this question for my sister who needs to have WLS. — Wendie G. (posted on November 10, 2003)

Wendie,
Most individual insurance coverage specifically excludes WLS. In fact,
when I was going through insurance hell, I contacted every insurance
company I could find to see if I could find one where I could do just that
- purchase a policy that would cover me for WLS. No luck. Of course, it's
been a couple of years, maybe things have gotten better.
Honestly, though - it may just be cheaper for her to save her pennies and
self-pay. That's what I ended up doing. I went to Spain (where I had one
of the world's leading bariatric surgeons!), and for surgery, travel -
everything - it was $15,800. I did wonderfully, and am as healthy as a
horse today!
Let me know if I can answer any questions, okay?
Blessings,
dina

Have you checked your state department of insurance? For example my state's
is ncdoi.gov (north carolina dept of insurance), on their website I found a
list of insurance companies who sell individual policies. Try this link
http://www.naic.org/state_contacts/sid_websites.htm for lists of different
states deptartments of insurance. Hope this helps.
