Question:
Has any one found it hard to drink the protein shakes before having surgery?

I am having surgery on Oct. 1 and i was put on a 2 week pre-op diet which consist of drinking protein shakes for 2 of my meals. I cannot stomach these protein drinks to me they are awful? it makes me gag.It is the sugar free taste that i can't stand. i have tried masking it with added ice, fruit, still no good. will this change after surgery? does anyone have any suggestions?    — Lynita C. I'm 5wks Post and have wasted a small fortune buying any and every Protein drink that someone mentions in hope that it'll taste better. I've not found anything that isn't awful although I try to choke them down on occassion.

Hi Lynita, Congratulations on your surgery date:)! I am pre-op but I have heard that the best tasting ones are the real meal ones. I place a sample order and I can let you know when I get them. Tis is their web-site: http://www.protein-solution.com/ God Bless! Lizette

Protein shakes are hard to determine what you will or won't like before buying. I tried some that were AWFUL, but then found MetRx and Syntrax Protein Nectar. The MetRx I make with water, add 1/2 cup of frozen unsweetened berries, and blend on high. It is thick like a milkshake and I can really taste the berries. The Apple Protein Nectar mixes easily with a spoon, is the consistency of juice, and to me tastes just like apple juice. It is bright green tho. I add crushed ice just before drinking it. I really love both of these and have been using them as a pre-op as a meal replacement. Trader Joes have a number of pre-made canned protein drinks. I like only having to buy one to try it. GNC will allow you to buy a protein mix, try and return it if not satisfied IF you keep you receipt. Just double check with the store to be sure they will honor the policy before purchasing. Vitamin shoppe locally has a number of single serving packets of protein powders all different flavors. Wishing you the best on your surgery.

The 'cloudy' protein shakes take a bit of getting used to. I am at this point also, trying different ones, pre-op, so I will know what to expect, before I HAVE to drink them. I have been experimenting with the 'Carb-Solutions' brand, and they mix with water, and where it calls for 8 oz. of water, I have found that by mixing w/12 oz. instead, they taste a bit more like a 'Yoo-Hoo' chocolate flavored drink. It also helps if you regrigerate it, or serve over ice to get it really cold. The thicker they are, the harder they seem to get down to me. I just picked up a box of 'Atkins Advantage Shake' at the local WalMart, it came in the Cafe Au Lait flavor, and tasted very good...as long as it is cold. GNC also sells a Nitro-Pure Fruit Punch protein drink, in a bottle and it is like a Hawaiin punch type flavor, but still too sweet for my taste, even though it is sugar free. I found that mixing it with a similar flavored crystal lite drink 1/2 & 1/2 it is pretty palatable. They all seem to be pretty pricey, but I guess it is one of the costs we have to pay. I did try one protein mix, that by itself was pretty tasty in it's powderd form, but when I mixed it with water and blended it was sooooo naassttyy, I had to throw the thing out. Trial and error.

I have been doing the low carb lifestyle as much as possible since the first of this year and I really like the Atkins Advantage shakes in the vanilla and strawberry flavors. I also like the cafe au lait, but not as frequently. I tend to not care for the chocolate because I like my chocolate to taste like good ol' CHOCOLATE!! haha. I think the protein shakes tend to be best very cold. I will most likely stick with the Atkins products once I am post-surgery, if I end up doing the surgery. I have not tried the shakes that you make from powder so can't address how tolerable they might be.

Try Isopure Zero Carbs Protein drinks, they come in all different kind of Kool-Aid type flavors. The come in 20 oz bottles but have 40 grams of protein. They are just a little thicker than kool-aid but so yummy, Apple melon is my favorite. Best very cold out of the fridge and then dumped over ice, they are pricey but if it's all you can handle it's worth the price. I figure pre-op I would have eaten more than the price of the drinks in food every day! Good luck!

It is a real chore finding a decent protein shake, there are so many out there that do NOT taste good. I suggest you order a bunch of single-serving samples, in different flavors, from vitalady.com or wlssuccess.com. I think I tried over a dozen types before finding two that were tolerable, and eventually I got to like one of them pretty well (though it took awhile). I'm glad I did. I would suggest you include among your samples Champion Nutrition's Chocolate Whey Stack, and Banana Scream, and Proscore 100 Chocolate (they seem to be popular flavors).<P>You can also try adding a pinch of sugar-free jello powder, or sugar-free pudding powder, to flavor your shakes, or using DaVinci sugar-free syrups in different flavors. I freeze my shake for about 20 minutes to make it slushy, and that also seems to help. Good luck!!

Gotta say, Champion Nutrition chocolate whey stack is the best, (mixed properly)I LOVE it. I drink 5 a day. It is under $30 shipping included at DPSnutrition.com. I take 1/3 cup of warm water 1 scoop of whey stack and shake vigorously, then add 8 ice cubes and shake again, then drink it, yum yum... going to have my shake now... Try Chocolate MetRX with a heaping tablespoon of unsweetened peanut butter. Mix well in blender, then add lots of ice and re-blend. Reece's Protein Shake!

Hi I am having surgery this friday and my Dr requires a liquid diet 7 days before surgery. I am like you I couldnt find any protein shakes I could drink without gagging. I make my own and althought they arent as good as a chocolate milk shake they are much better than the store bought shakes. I bought Whey protein powder mix, I put 1 tray of ice, 2 scoops of whey powder (50 gm protein) add 100% fruit juice and sometimes a banana. Try it you might like it.

Someone turned me onto a shake powder called UnJury. Oh gosh if you like Nestles Quik i am pretty sure you will love the chocolate. Only trouble is you have to order it online, some docs have samples in their office but the addy for info and ordering is www.UNJURY.com...haven't tryed the vanilla or unflavored as of yet, im really into the chocolate mixed with 1% milk. Its not gritty and the colder the milk the better. Good luck Sally

Hi Lynita, I also am pre-op, everyone has their own ideas as to what is the best protein shake or brand. I personally went online to www.vitalady.com and bought several brands and mixed up the flavors, they were like 1.99 each, I also went to www.gourmetprotein.com and did the same, one other is www.fightingweight.com, both these were free samples only S&H. This way I have opened and split one packet at a time using 1/4 of pack to 3 oz. skim milk. So far ones tried have been very good to me. I am taking notes on each brand and flavor, this way I know what I will buy when the time comes. Hope this helps.
