Question:
One year postop and FREEZING all the time.
I know it is probably due to the fact that I've lost all my insulation, but this is ridiculous!! I've gone from 282lbs to 118lbs and I CAN'T GET WARM!!!!! I live in SE Alabama where the heat index is over 100 every day but I'm sleeping with 2 electric blankets on the bed and at WalMart looking for sweatpants. Is this normal or am I going to get hypothermia by the time winter gets here!?!:) — redheadtedd (posted on September 3, 2003)

Well I can't answer for someone out over a year as I am only 5 months out,
but freezing has become a way of life for me. My son thinks I'm nutty
because Texas has 90 degree days and 100 degree heat indexes as a way of
life but I'm always cold. I live in warm ups at home!

Same for me. I'm two years out and freezing ALL the time. I have to take
a jacket everywhere, and use a heater at work. People think I'm nuts.

Okay, this is not fair. I am down to 175 from 235 and still sweat like a
pig. Even during our 70 degree nights, I sleep with the fan on my bed,
which is making my husband contemplate sleeping on the couch. Please tell
me your secret. ;)

Hi Kelli, I was once hot all of the time. I have lost 70lbs and I actually
feel cool when others are hot. Today my doc decided to run some labs to
make sure everything is ok. She said that it can either be normal (a loss
of insulation) or it could be that my labs are off. If you are that cold,
perhaps you should go for a physcial. Best wishes -

You're definately not alone. I've gone from 355 on Surgery day (8/15/2002)
to 189 and I've lived in sweats all summer. Here in Virginia it's been
super muggy hot and I've been freezing the whole summer, but my labs are
normal.

It gets better, though at 118, sweetie, you have NO insulation at all! I
was freezing most of my first year post-op but at 18 mo post-op, its
better. Still wear long sleeves to work in air conditioning, and sweaters
to the movies but it does get better.

I freeze all the time too. I keep telling my husband that I want to put
the flannel sheets on the bed, but he said flannel sheets in the summer is
grounds for divorce (ha ha). I just wear warmer clothing and layer now.
It is so funny because pre-surgery I would break a sweat with just a small
amount of activity like unloading a grocery cart onto the belt at the
checkout. I can definately handle being cold if loosing 127 so far is the
benefit.

I am 23 months post op; I have lost 168 lbs (down from 302 to 134). I
remember freezing but I quit freezing about 18 months post op. It does get
better. And I used to absolutely burn up but no longer.

Hi Kelli,
I am down 104 lbs in 8 months and am so cold all the time. I even stopped
taking my estragen replacement praying for hot flashes, but they never
come. Living in Maine isn't helping either, we have 2 seasons, winter and
July 4th. Good luck at staying warm.

Hi...well, I'm 2 years postop, and I freeze constantly. I'm in Central
Florida, where you can swim in the air it's so hot and humid, and I'm
wearing Old Navy sweater hoodies to work all the time. AND I'm putting my
office sweater on over it every now and then..I went from 316 to 158 and it
hasn't eased up at all...hope it does for you! All I can say is "Soup
for lunch, please!!".. :o) Denise

Just try to find a sweater in july because the only one you have is 2 sizes
too big and yo are freezing to death. My husband and I are in a battle over
the thermostat, and I sleep with a puffy comforter.

I am only pre-op (at least til Sept 15th!) but I freeze all the time now as
it is at 257 pounds (5'3")...I can't imagine freezing more so
afterwards but guess that is a price I'll have to pay...Had hoped my inside
thermostat would get regulated afterwards! haha...

Have you had your thyroid checked? Your thyroid controls the body's
thermostat. I had a problem with being cold all of the time and just
couldn't get warm. I was already taking Synthroid for hypothyroidism.
When I had my level checked (a simple blood test), it was still too low.
My doctor upped my Synthroid dose and the freezing stopped. If it
persists, see your doctor. And congrats on your great weight loss!

Get your thyroid checked -- have the do the FULL test, too, not just the
single test. I was freezing and my thyroid had dropped very low. I hadn't
gotten tired yet, but was just cold as all heck... and I was in Oklahoma
during 115 degree heat!! Also, adjusting to body temp changes will take
time, without your insulation, but just to be safe, get that thyroid
checked!!!
