Great question! I'm 55 and since nobody had answered you yet I thought maybe I could be of a little help. I had surgery this year, shortly after my 55th birthday and I've done great - Open RNY 2/7/03 - 248/186 - 62 lbs lost. I haven't set any records but I'm feeling great. I've been most fortunate to have had no complications at all. I was also fortunate to be relatively healthy pre-op but I did have high blood pressure, high blood sugar, way high lipids and lots of back and joint pain. I feel so much better now it's amazing - and my BP and lab work are close to perfect. I still have a way to go - my age and my "lightweight" (what a funny term for a fat old lady!) status don't help with the speed of my loss and yes, I wish this had been safely available 30 years ago - but I feel for the first time in years and years that I'm doing the best I can to get to live a long a healthy life. I'm very glad I did this - even at this age it's made a world of difference. Good luck to you in whatever you decide is right for you!

My mother-in-law did but she is not online. She turned 65 4 weeks after her surgery. She had surgery 90 days ago (I had mine LAP one month before hers). She did have some problems. She would never tell us for certain how much she weighed, but at 5'2", judging from others at the Dr's office we guess she was at least 400lbs. First they found a major ulcer which they cut out. Post op she needed assistance bathing, changing her dressing and using the toilet. Frankly, she needed that same help before the surgery as well. She was put back into the hospital for dehydration 2 weeks post-op because she kept vomiting. No stricture, she was just trying to swallow too much with each gulp. A few days on IV's and help from a dietician helped her tremendously. At 3 months post op her weight loss is at 75lbs. She is moving much better and faster with her walker and she has been going up and down stairs on her own - something she hasn't done in 10 years -HOORAY FOR MOM!!!

I love Maggie's report on her MIL. I can just picture her zooming around with her walker! Pretty soon she'll throw it away. WLS is SO amazing! I had DS a year ago at age 54. My BMI was 57 and my health was quite poor. I had no complications at all and didn't even need the pain meds after the first day. Of course that's not true for everyone, but I never felt my age was any problem and have not heard of a correlation between age and complications in any of the discussion groups. Preop I was 54 and felt 84. Now I'm 55 and feel 25! You can learn about the wonderful DS at http://www.duodenalswitch.com

I had my rny surgery on 4/15/02 at the age of 62. I did have some breathing proiblems after and ended up in ICU for 2 days. This happens to me with any surgery. I just turned 64 last Sunday and I am down a total of 150 pounds. I started at 343. I did have a hernia repair in December. If you have any other questions e-mails me. I'd do it again in a heart beat. Judy Shock

OMG there are so many of us oldies that have had surgery. My DH and I did it together, some of us have a group on Yahoo. All you have to do is e-mail [email protected] and she will send you an invite. So far most of us do extremely well. Many were in wheelchairs or with walkers and canes and now just run around like kids.

Thank God there are others!! I'm 65 and probably will be 66 before I get the surgery. I really didn't think there was anyone else. I'm preop so I can't help you...wish I could. I just wanted to touch base with you..Hugs..MJ
