Question:
I read where somebody said to be sure to check out your surgon with the AMA.
I need more information on how to go about that. — Kay T. (posted on July 20, 2003)

I'm not sure about the AMA, but they probably have a web site if you do a
google search. However, there are two other sites that may be ueful, (1)
American Society for Bariatric Surgery (www.asbs.org) - if your surgeon is
a member or affiliate membeer, then that would indicate a dedication to
bariatric surgery beyond a general surgeon; (2) Questionabledoctors.org
(www.questionabledoctors.org) - while this site is not totally
comprehensive, since not all states have a database, you should do a
nationwide search, it is free, and if your surgeon is listed, it would
indicate that he/she was sanctioned by a state medical licensing board.
Good luck.

I checked out my doctor (in Texas). I called the AMA and they told me I
had to call the Texas Medical Association.
This is to check to be sure no disciplinary actions have been filed against
the doctor.
Then you have to call the Civil Court Clerk's office of the county/State
you are in and ask if there are any current or past malpractice (civil)
cases against the doctor. In my case, the Texas Medical Association gave
me the number of the civil court to call in the appropriate county. Hope
this is of some help.
