Question:
Does anyone find that when they go all day w/out eating that

when they do eat a meal they can consume more than normal? I've been so busy ruinning around today that the only thing I did as drink fluid, but did not eat food. My mom barbecued and I was able to eat one veggie burger,1/3 cup of raw spinach, and one small shred of chicken about a 1/4 cup if i had chopped it up,and I prob could have eaten some bites of the potato salad but I didn't. I should note that when eating the veggie burger I ate 3/4 and was full and had to wait a few minutes before I could finish the rest-does this sound like alot for an almost 4 month postie? Could it be because I did not eat all day I was able to consume more???    — TotallyTori (posted on July 4, 2003)

This is a bad habit - try to avoid it at all costs. Your stomach has been "disabled" and you must have constant nourishment. Even if you just grab a yogurt or piece of fruit - you need to keep eating small frequent meals. Depending on whether you had RNY or DS, if RNY your stomach should only hold about 2 ounces at a time at this point. You can stretch things back out if you don't use more care. However, don't think I'm trying to rag on you - I'm just trying to help you think of this carefully - I would hate for you to think I was just being witchy - I really just want you to not get off the "straight and narrow" so soon in your journey. Best wishes.

Victoria ~ I have some days like this too. Some days I can only eat 1/2 cup or so at a meal, other days I can do 1 cup or more! I call those my bottomless-pit days. I try to be very carefull on my bottomless-pit days to eat healthy so I'm not overloading on calories or fat grams. I think we're normal, especially if we're not making ourselves sick or eating the wrong things. A veggie burger, spinach and grilled chix is very healthy! I wouldn't worry too much. ~Michelle, Open RNY 1/3/03...100 lbs gone and counting!!

Yes, not eating for more than a five hour or more stretch will make it easier for you to eat that much more when you do finally eat. I wouldn't be so concerned with how much you ate, but more concerned with the fact that not eating and then eating a lot in one sitting is similar to past behaviors which lead to obesity to begin with for many of us. As for 2oz only (what another poster wrote), this is misinformation. For one thing, many people even 2 months out such as myself can eat 1/2 cup and sometimes more at a time - especially if the foods are on the soft side which what you ate are. Also, you ate, waited a little (giving a chance to make more space in your pouch) and then ate again. Unless this is a daily thing, I wouldn't worry about it and would just plan to get back on track tomorrow :) Wishing you the best!

I agree with the previous poster. It's normal to be able to eat more if you haven't eaten, and the 2oz thing just isn't true for MOST of us. I'm 7 months post and if I skip lunch, I can eat more at dinner. I try not to do that, but we all get busy. I just have to make sure I don't overeat and become miserable! Other than that, there's no harm done. You ate healthy stuff, which is what we are supposed to do. The futher out we get, the more food we can eat. Our stomachs become more elastic, and that's why following the pouch rules becomes more and more important. :) We shouldn't ever be able to eat as much as we could before (volume wise) but our ability to hold more does increase with time, somewhat, from the time we are new post ops.
