Question:
I have been having bloody noses caused by my cpap
HELP. What can I do if my cpap is causing me to have a bloody nose. Do you think Aetna will insist on the 6 month diet when I can't wear my cpap. — greg17 (posted on June 29, 2003)

Does your machine have a humidifer attached?

I do much better when I use a humidifier, especially during the winter
months when the house is very dry.

Yes, a humidifier is needed for your CPAP, should be used all year round.
Also, after several sinus surgeries and UVPP surgery to remove the uvula
(thingy that hangs in the back of your throat)...supposed to help possibly
cure sleep apnea...didn't for me...only quieted the snoring some...I found
that using AYR Saline Nasal Mist 2 or 3 times a day to moisten the nasal
membranes helped tremendously. AYR also makes a saline gel that soothes
your nostrils. Don't let anything stop you from using that CPAP machine! Do
everything you have to to make it comfortable so that you will use it
consistently. Good Luck, Anna

A heated humidifier works the best for keeping the nose moist. You can
also ask your doctor for a Rx for Vancenase or Nasonex nasal spray. A
little Vicks or Vaseline rubbed in the nostrils also works.

Thanks for the replies to my question. I'm sorry I forgot to mention that
it has a heated humidfier attached.

DO NOT use vasoline in your nose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The nasal sprays
mentioned below are good ideas, but whatever you do...do not use
vasoline!!!!! I am a nurse in pulmonary medicine, we deal with cpap and
oxygen patients everyday, valsoline cannot easily wash out of your
nose...it will build up, become hard, and impact causing nasal and sinus
infections!!!! We have had several patients that have needed nasal surgery
to remove the vasoline clumps!!!! This can also eat away at the mask if it
gets on it!!!!! Ayr gel or spray is what we reccommend.
