Question:
How many grams of protein should we be eating 2 years post op?
I was just wondering how many grams of protein is recommended for a 2 year post op patient? I really haven't been too concerned as long as I had extra fat, but now that I am at goal, I am more concerned w/ the amount of recommended protein per day. — peppermintp (posted on June 25, 2003)

My surgeon recommends a minimum of 42g of protein for women who are of
normal weight. Having said that, he told me that while 42g is adequate,
the more, the better. I am 19 months post-op and I still get about 50 - 60
g a day. I asked if I could get too much and he (and the nutritionist)
said no.

A good answer would be to look at your labs. Most lab results show normal
protein level as 6.0 to 8.3, give or take a little depending on the lab.
If the amount of protein you eat currently keeps your protein blood levels
within the "normal range", and you don't have problems with signs
or symptoms of low protein, then I'd say you're are getting enough. If
your lab values are off, then eat more. If you are really concerned, have
your md run a blood test for you, or ask for a copy of your last few blood
results to check for yourself. Most people are very stable with their
protein levels by 2 yrs out it would seem, so your blood value would be a
good indicater of where you are at with your current dietary intake. Hope
that helps. Best Wishes.
