Hi Jennifer~ I am 6 weeks post op and I too have been able to eat more than
what I felt I was suppose to. I could eat 1/2 cup refried beans at 3 weeks
wih 0 fullness. I am able to now eat 1 single soft taco w grilled chicken .
I think I start to feel full so I stop, but I've eaten more than I think I
should. I do not get pains nor do I throw up. The surgeon said if I eat
too much I will throw up OR be in pain. I am losing, at 5 weeks I was down
32 lbs. Talk to your Dr. or nutritionists. Good luck

Everyone is different. But I have heard that if your stomach is not
completely separated from your pouch (transected), then it is possible for
food to get through. I am 4 weeks out and I cannot eat that much. Check
with your Doctor!! Good Luck!! Sherry

I have been criticized by "friends" who have had the surgery who
call me up all the time telling me what to eat and not to eat expecting me
to follow their program (and I have lost as much or more than they have)
because I could eat and they couldn't. The only thing I have not eaten yet
is bread. Bread expands A LOT in your stomach. Try putting a piece into a
cup of water and see what happens an hour or two later. Imagine that going
through your intestines. But I don't want to do or say to you what has
been done/said to me. I just want you to be careful. Eat what you can
tolerate but be careful. Marcy Lap-to-open RNY

When you start focusing more on protein and less on the carb addiction,
you'll find you cannot each as much. Pure protein will fill you up faster
and for longer. Try to drop the carbs. I know it's difficult, but once
you stop them, you stop craving them. Good luck.

I totally understand what you are going through! I've had the same
experience and the same question.."am i eating too much" I have
just come to understand that everyone is different and that we CANNOT
compare ourselves to other people...each person is unique. my surgeon said
to eat what feels good and not a bite more. good luck to you!

not everyone may want to do this, but i went to wal-mart and bought a
scale. it was like $5, it is not the digital, super fancy one! i weigh out
3-4 ounces before i eat. that away, i know i wont over eat and i am allowed
the whole amount... just a thought

Everyone is different as to the amounts they can eat post-op. Keep in mind
that pouch sizes are different too, ranging from just a 1/2 an ounce to 6
ounces or so, with the average being about 2-3 oz. The bigger the pouch
the more you can fit in there. I doubt someone with 1/2 an ounce pouch to
start with could eat more than a few bites of that sandwich but someone
with a larger pouch could do the entire 1/2 a sandwich. Also was it a big
stuffed 1/2 a sandwich or a very thin one? See what I mean? Also, how
long did it take you to eat it? Anyone could eat the entire 1/2 if they
took their time....Don't fret. Now if you told me you ate a 6 inch Subway
sub in 10 minutes and could still eat more at 3 weeks, I would worry. And
as for bread, as long as its a healthy bread, like a multigrain or whole
wheat, its considered a good carb, and as long as your doc is not
restricted carbs, your OK. Some posters are very anti-carb and their
surgeons restrict their carb intakes but for others of us, we include carbs
as a normal part of our post-op diets and lose just as well.

I was the same way. I am now 7 weeks on Tuesday from the Lap Roux NY. I
took the time to notice that I really was getting full just not really
noticing it. I did not know what this new full was and kept eating past
that point. And the other thing the doc told me was to toast all of my
breads. It is true that you must first recondition yourself to what
portions you should be eating and not push the limits on it. Start making a
conscious effort to eat only the 2-3 ozs that you are supposed to and your
body will recognize and you will feel full. Everyday with this new tool is
a learning process and your body is talking to you if you only tune your
ears to hear it. I know I had to listen a little harder than others.

at three weeks out i could eat a slice of light wheat bread and a couple of
ounces of tuna. i could eat a lot less of foods that were harder to
digest, like beef. when i questioned if i was eating too much, the best
advice i got was to trust the way i felt, and to stop eating a few bites
before i felt really full. that advice served me well, and i still follow
it. you'll know if you're eating too much, because you'll feel awful.
listen to your body and you'll be fine. good luck!
