Question:
Anyone experience extreem fatigue after eating?
About 5 minutes after I eat I get extreemly tired. I start yawning and sometimes I just need to sleep - even if for only 10-15 mins then I'm fine. It happens after every meal. Even if it's just a plain protein meal. Anyone else experience the same thing and will it resolve after a while? I'm 1 month post-op. Thanks! — adeas (posted on June 14, 2003)

Hello: I get the same thing with almost every meal....I will be 2 yrs post
op in August and it still happens to me daily....I can't explain it...It
happens if I over eat, eat all protein, have a protein shake, glass of ice
tea, etc....stil can't pin point what triggers it....Guess it is one of my
wierd quirks....

This happens to me too but only when I overeat or if I eat something that
might cause dumping. It happens every time I drink orange juice. It also
happens when I eat bread or potatos and I tend to get a little sick from
both.

Happened to me the first 2 or 3 months post-op. Fortunately my system kind
of out-grew it :>) I hope yours does too!

Sounds like classic mild dumping.....possibly either too much hidden sugar,
fat or eating too fast. Happened to me the first 2 years after surgery.

I agree with Lynette. Sounds like mild dumping to me too. I dump on almost
everything so I have to be extremely careful about what and how much I eat.
Take a good luck at what you're eating and see if small changes in the
fat/carb counts help. Good luck.

I disagree, I don't think this is dumping at all! I also had that happen
for the first couple of months or so! It was so irritating it made me not
want to eat at all!! But like everything else, it passes and soon you will
get more energy after your meal!! Don't worry! :)

I have to agree with Iris. I am 10 weeks post op and have been through the
same thing but it has gotten better. I even questioned my nutritionist
about this. He wasn't sure either. I have never "dumped" as of
yet. However, I like the some of the other posters, worried about eating
because of the way I felt afterwards. I worried about where I was because
I knew that I would either need a nap or somewhere to sit and rest. I was
extremely tired no matter what went in my mouth. It really doesn't make
sense to me why this happens but I'm delighted to know that I am not alone.
And, it has gotten better - MUCH BETTER. Exercise, I think is what helps
me the most! Good luck!

I had this happen the first 6 weeks after the surgery - everytime I had
protein shakes ro my soft foods. I was told that the proiten shake
exhaustion was mild dumping. I never got a reason for the food exhaustion
but I am 10 weeks out and I no longer have the problem.

I am 8 months out and have experienced this little syndrome a time or two.
It's very mild in nature and goes away quickly. I don't notice it to be
with any particular food. As far as quantity, well, my quantity is SMALL
and I stop as soon as I get the feeling of being satisfied. I don't eat
until I feel "full". I do try lots of different things. I can
even eat two or three small bites of dessert. What is wonderful and very
surprising to me, is those two or three small bites are satisfying and
enough. I LOVE this! Open RNY and down 160 lbs.

Just my two cents because I am a preop but sounds like it has something to
do with your blood sugar level which I guess in a sense is dumping.I have
hypoglycemia and when I go to long without eating and then suddenly eat a
decent meal I get a really bad headache and then get very sleepy it usually
passes after a while but during this time its almost unbearable.

I am almost 2 years post-op and I also have this problem. I have recently
been told that I have hypoglycemia. I have to eat about every 2 hours and
if I should eat too much then I am exhausted for about 30 minutes. It
doesn't matter what I eat.

same thing happens to me - i'm about 6 weeks post op. seems to happen
mostly when i've eaten new foods, and perhaps have had a bite or two too
many. i don't eat much sugar, so i don't think that's the problem. it
generally passes in about 15 minutes. if i'm home i may lie down, but if
i'm out or at work, i just soldier on until it passes.

I get the extreme sleepiness (even fell asleep in a doctor's waiting room
once) after a higher than normal carbohydrate meal. For me, it's part of
dumping. However, if you're having this reaction after a pure protein
meal, I'm wondering if you're eating too much or if there are
"hidden" carbs in your food. What's a "plain protein
meal" for you?
