Question:
Has anyone tried to purchase an health insurance policy, to cover WLS, it selp-pay?
I have no insurance and I think I make too much money to qualify for medicaid, but I still cannot afford WLS. I've thought about buying a private health insurance plan, but I don't know what types and what kind of limits might arise. Any ideas? — Terri T. (posted on June 4, 2003)

I hope this helps! I tried to do that and because of my weight they would
not let me purchase private insurance. I was denied. The only way to get
health insurance is though a group plan then they don't check height and
weight they automatically accept you though group plans. That is my
experience here in California because I went through the same trouble. I
had no insurance and when I tried to purchase Blu Cross they denied me
because of my wright. Then I remembered I belonged to the board of Realtors
and they offer health plans through the group,I ended up with Blue Cross no
questions asked. So if there is anyway you can go through a group it will
be no problem.

I did exactly that. I began my journey in Aug 2001. I didn' t have
insurance for a year and applied in February of 2002 for an individual PPO
plan thur BC of GA. I was 260lb and they approved me. I did have to wait a
year because they had a pre-existing waiting period clause since I hadn't
had continuous coverage but I resubmitted this year and was approved in 7
days.
