Question:
Is it safe to donate marrow then have WLS within several months of each other?
I am in the process of being approved for WLS. I have already seen the coordinator and the pre-op nutritionist. I just have to have a psych evalulation before my appointment with the surgeon will be scheduled so I am right on track. However, last Friday I received a call that I may be a match for a child that needs a bone marrow donation (I have been on the donor list for about 5 years now). I was excited at the thought that I could help someone but my husband said he wants me to be 100% when I have this surgery so he doesn't want me to consider donation. I think I would be fine as long we they are a couple of months apart. There is no question in my mind that I would delay the wls if I match the child that needs me. Does anyone know if it is safe to donate marrow then have wls within several months of each other? I would like some good facts to share with my husband that will show him everything would be fine. Thanks for your help. — tntwildlife77 (posted on May 12, 2003)

Hi. I'm sorry, I don't have an answer to your question and I'm keeping my
fingers crossed that somebody will. I just wanted to tell you what a
wonderful person you are! I have seen first-hand the miracle that a bone
marrow transplant can provide. I wish there were more people like you in
the world. I'm sure your surgery, whenever you may have it, will be a huge
success - you deserve nothing but the best!!!

I work in the BMT field and I know that the unrelated donor registry wants
their donors to not be overweight. Have you discussed your weight with the
donor center?
