Be careful about this type of question. Ask yourself what the hurry is.
The weight will come off with any surgery you choose. YOU do have control
over the speed by what YOU do to help your tool (your tool is the surgery).
Exercise, water, protein, external support are all the keys to taking off
the weight within the time frame you want and much more importantly than
the speed -- KEEPING the weight off for good. This ain't easy like some on
the outside looking in may think. There are so many factors involved other
than a smaller stomach and malabsorption. Get thee to a support group
meeting and start asking some of the unasked questions like what makes
people successful then sit, and listen. Good luck and God Bless!

I have to echo Kimberly's answer on this. What is your hurry? If you want
to lose weight for a specific event then you are not entering into this
with the right mindset. Better questions would be "Which surgery is
more appropriate for me?" "Which physician has the best
reputation?" etc. Just doing it fastest is not the best criteria for
choosing a procedure. Best wishes to you.

To answer your question....the duodenal switch tends to give a slightly
faster weight loss because it is a more malabsorptive procedure. But you can
also be at a higher risk for malabsorbtion problems.

Actually, with the Duodenal Switch (DS), most patients tend to lose a
little bit more slowly than with the RNY. This is because most of the
initial weight loss (with either surgery) is largely a result of the
restrictive aspect, not the malabsorption. With the RNY, your food intake
is usually very restricted in the early months, and this results in rapid
weight loss. With the DS, the weight comes off more gradually (though still
amazingly fast, in the big scheme of things), but the malabsorption keeps
your weight loss "window" open longer, and helps to prevent late
regain. I know that when I was making my WLS decision, I was most concerned
about finding the surgery that would help me obtain the best long-term
results, not the one that would result in the fastest loss.

I think the confusion here is in the wording of the question. I think Jolie
is asking if her rate of loss will be different if her RNY is performed
laparoscipically or open. The answer to that of course is no.. no matter
HOW the surgery is performed.
When you ask about surgery TYPES most of us think the KINDS of WLS
available.. the RNY, BPD, DS and AGB.. NOT the way that surgery type is
performed (Open or Lap).
So, not a 'wrong' way to ask Jolie, but rather a choice of wording that
stymied a few of us.. no worries, keeps us on our toes. *G*

I have been to 2 surgeons seminars and both have said that the weightloss
