I don't understand your question. Why are you needing diet pills. Why are
you asking for answers and then say you only want answers that agree with
you. Help me out girl.

Sorry. I'm going to say it anyway. It's reckless to take diet pills to
"speed up weight loss at about 6 wks post-op." Your body is
struggling with malnourishment as it is at that point. I'd strongly urge
you to begin pursuing an exercise program (with doc's approval), if you
want to take the bull by the horns to try to retrain your metabolism
naturally via responsible exercise. If you have any serious interest in
maintaining your weight at goal, you'll use this time to re-learn your
eating habits, not race for a destination you'll never be able to stay at
by playing games with pills and shortcuts that don't work.

You can speed up your metabolisium by excersize instead. The benifits are
FAR supieor to diet pills.

If any of those diet pills/supplements worked would we have all put
ourselves through major surgery? Oh sorry, that's probably preaching! But
why? Why?! Don't take these things, whether pre-op or post-op!!!

As far as I know, anything you take by mouth that affects your metabolism
is potentially asdangerous as ephedra. I decided to have this surgery
because I was extremely afraid of the prescription and over the counter
items that do this. The supplements we take are straight vitamins and
don't affect our heart function. Give it a little time and good luck!

I agree with the others who have said that the best way to boost your
metabolism and speed up the weight loss is exercise. I've never used any
type of diet pills - ephedra, fen/phen (or is that phen/fen?), Meredia,
Xenical etc - and I never will. As somebody said, if these things worked
for long-term weight loss, then why would tens of thousands of MO people be
getting this surgery every year?

Its funny, I keep coming back to this question since I read it earlier
today. I'm sure my wisdom won't be any different than others... but I
haven't read below -- here goes

If diet pills worked
safely and longterm -- you wouldn't need this surgery, would
you?

That's my opinion, because most certainly, if I could take a pill and lose
weight AND KEEP it off, I would have done that instead. Good luck...
EXERCISE.. you need to build habits for a lifetime, not a few months.

IMO, diet pills are sort of dangerous. They speed up your
heart rate a lot and they don't boost your metabolism all that
much. I tried them for a brief amount of time and they made
me shaky, jittery, and they gave me the runs. Why do that
to yourself? Exercise is MUCH BETTER and you get MUCH BETTER
results!

Victoria,
Hi there thought I would pop on in and post my answer, seems allot of
people have posted and rather then answering your question they've
preached, we're all human right ? We've tried those drugs, either pre- or
post op, we're not perfect from any means.
When I was about 9 months post op, my energy died off, so bad I had no
energy to even work out, I would go to work, and then from work straight
home to bed, I had all my blood work done, and everything came back normal,
nothing wrong...
How-ever I was dragging but big time, I decided I would venture into the
ephedra, I took 1 pill every day and my energy soared threw the roof, I
never even took more then 1 pill.... The recommended dosage was 3 pills a
day, so I could hardly imagine what that would have done....
Recently at a group seminar with my surgeon there he brought up the subject
of ephedra and stated that there was nothing wrong with it, as long as it's
used correctly and not abused, (As with any drug) he felt that there no
problem taking it, he did mention that it would have to be in it's purest
form, no additives. He also stated that the jitters that accompany the
drug usually wear off within 2 weeks, and that afterwards, there should be
no actual affect other then your body (on the inside running at a higher
burning temptature) , burning calories faster.....
I've been taking 1 pill every other day, or when needed for energy... The
weight loss has slowed down, seeing I'm only 18 pounds away from goal, and
those are the hardest to loose......
How-ever you did mention 1 thing, you're only 6 weeks out, take your time,
...... we didn't get fat over night..... let your body work it's self out,
and if in the future you venture into any diet drug, play it safe and wait
at least till you're out 8 + months, better safe then sorry.
Hope I've been some help.
Best of luck.

Tori - after reading that last point, I feel the need to present the other
side again. Go to your favorite search engine and type in the name
"STEVE BECHLER". Steve was a 23-year-old pitching prospect for
the Baltimore Orioles baseball team who died February 17, less than 24
hours after complaining of dizziness during a workout. He died due to
multiple organ failure due to heat exhaustion brought on by taking
ephedrine-based diet products. Steve was only 20-30 pounds overweight and
felt the need to lose the weight to get into shape for spring training.
Steve left behind his wife, who was 7 months pregnant with their first
child at the time of Steve's death.

Steve is not the only person to die under similar circumstances. Korey
Stringer, a football player for the Minnesota Vikings, also died from heat
exhaustion and his death was linked to ephedrine too.

From your post, Tori, it sounds like you know better than to use ephedra,
but I just wanted others who may be considering it to know the dangers of
these drugs...JR

Hi Victoria, I was going to ask the same question you did earlier post-op
but decided to spare myself the preaching. I must point out I'm 20 months
post, but wanted something to help suppress my appeptite. I started taking
"Results" by Dexstatrim. They do have a derivative of ephedra in
them which earlier post I would have been affraid of because of having
higher blood pressure (I didn't want to give myself a heart attack). I have
to say I've been taking them for about a week now and feel wonderful. I'm
dwindling down to my last few extra pounds and just wanted something to
help jump start my stalled loss. Different scenerio, maybe helpful anyway.
Best wishes. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 282/129/125
