Question:
Anyone else have dumping symptoms every time they eat?
I am 2 years post-op RNY. I am not sure what is happening, but it seems over time that I have a dumping syndrome very soon after I eat anything - doesn't matter if it is sugar. My heart races and I feel awful, but I still manage to function... I mean life goes on, doesn't it?!? I have heard that dumping is caused by food moving too fast into the small intestine - - would this mean that my stoma is too stretched? I am very scared, since I have gained a little bit of weight back. Anyone else deal with constant dumping symptoms? — Adrienne E. (posted on April 15, 2003)

Dumping is really only caused by sugar. Sugar does get into the small
intestine really quickly. Then your intestines 'suck' all the water they
can out of your system to process it, causing the watery diarrhea. Also,
your pancreas thinks it's getting a load of sugar, so it kicks out a bunch
of insulin, causing the sweaty, shaky feeling. If I were you, I'd call my
surgeon to see if he can provide any answers.

Gar my surgeon says anyone can dump on anything. But the poter should call
their surgeon and PCP immediately. Any labs done lately?

Gar - I can dump on high-fat stuff. I made the mistake of having corn dog
nuggets at Walt Disney World in December, and I felt awful for 30-40
minutes. I was queasy, felt crappy and confused and basically had to sit
on a bench outside for that 30-40 minutes before I felt normal again.
I've had lesser reactions to other high-fat stuff like regular mayo...JR

I too dump on greasy/oily foods. I dumped on baked fish sticks and baked
chicken tenders with no extra oil added to the pan and all salad dressings
even low/no fat ones. Asked my doc about it and he said yes it is possible
and in some people this is common. I've talked to others in my support
group who do the same thing. Talk to your surgeon about this and see what
the two of you can work out. You dont have to suffer. Take care. Sidney

I just posted this to the MB, but after 7 or 8 months out, I seem to have
developed a severe dumping/allergic type reaction to chocolate. (OK, I
know I shouldn't have been eating it anyway, but I did sometimes.) I got
some pretty intense stomach cramping, and it was a real pain until I
managed to tie the two things together last night. Looks like it's goodbye
chocolate for a good long time, for me!

I get this feeling when I eat a little too much of something with carbs in
it. It is distinctly different than the way I feel if I eat something
greasy (which also makes me nauseated). I call it "pre-dumping"
because it is like dumping but not quite the full-fledged experience. I get
hot and my heart pounds in my chest. I feel better if I can lie down. It
lasts 10 or 15 minutes for me and passes. Maybe you could try eating a
little less at a time and more often. I find that it happens to me when I
eat more than I should really be eating at one time. It may not be the same
for you.<p>Dumping--in the true sense of the insulin reaction--will
only occur with sugars but anything can make you feel sick! I know plenty
of people who are fat-sensitive. (Not me, thank heavens!) It isn't dumping
but it doesn't feel good whatever you call it! If you find out anything
from your dr/nutritionist, be sure to pass it on. You're not alone.

I have just been diagnosed with severe delayed dumping syndrome. I do not
eat fats and I don't eat sugar. I get it after every meal. I am now on
medication for it and if that fails to help will need to have some kind of
revision surgery. Anyone else having the same problem?? Any suggestions??
I am 11 months out and have lost 175 pounds, but this just started out of
no where and my doctor(s) are stumped. Anyone can help at all?
