Question:
HOW LONG DOES FOOD STAY IN POUCH?
I'm taking powdered calcium and for best absorbtion it should be taken on an empty stomach. What is an empty stomach? How long after we eat is our pouch empty and how long should I wait before I eat after I've taken my calcium? — Kelly* P. (posted on April 14, 2003)

My surgeon says that a good rule of thumb is that food stays in the pouch
for 30 minutes. Of course, things that are very soft or liquid go through
much faster. That is why we aren't supposed to drink for 30 minutes after
we eat.

Well for me it's anywhere from less than 30 minutes to 2-4 hours later when
I throw it up. If I eat ground, shredded, soft things they go down fine
and stay down, but do not likely hang around all that long. I started
having problems at 6 weeks with keeping dense foods down. Even though I
chew them thoroughly they sit like a rock and just do not move through.
Sometimes I go to drink many hours later and end up throwing up. I'm being
scoped tomorrow to find out what's going on. The first 6 weeks even the
denser foods felt like they had mostly moved on after about 30 minutes.

What kind oif calcium is it? Citrate likes a non-acid enviromnment. So, if
it's citrate, we don't have much acid on board, even WITH food. I take
mine with food. Food with pills, pills with food. Makes me take the pills,
limitis my food consummption (no pills to take? so sad, no food)
