Question:
I am 5 weeks post-op and have a very hard time having a BM.
It took me 45 min. today to get the stool to come out. I was used to eating lots of fuit and raw veggies before surgery and know that is why I am having a terrible time. I had open RNY and will Milk of Magnesia hurt my pouch? — Betty W. (posted on April 12, 2003)

I had the same problem at 6 weeks post op. I called my primary physician
and his nurse said to drink apple juice with no added sugar and to get more
fiber. My surgeon said i could eat anything i could handle so that wasnt a
problem for me. I drink one cup of apple juice a day and it helps keep me
regular. But if you are really wanting to take something i would check
with your doctor first. Good luck and i hope you feel better soon.

Betty, my surgeon recommended milk of magnesia for this reason. I had
problems as well, especially due to the anasthesia and then pain pills
after surgery, this can cause constipation. You should get some relief with
the m of m. goodluck to you

Betty, like Nan, I was prescribed miralax because I also was having the
same problems you are. It helped tremendously. It is tasteless too. I no
longer need it at 12 months post op but it got me though that phase of the
journey.
