Question:
How long before I can eat some peanut butter?
I am 11 days post op and would like to know if it safe to eat a little peanut butter the taste lasts a long time in your mouth and it has some protein that I could use. — Kenneth C. (posted on April 11, 2003)

Peanut butter was the first thing that tasted good. The best thing to do
is only have enough to coat your mouth, it is pretty sticky. Also I would
make a piece of toast and while HOT I would spread the peanut butter on it
then lick it off :) Never ate the bread, just the hot gooey peanut
butter!! It was awesome. Of course I always have to say to check with your
doc before doing anything, just in case. **13 months PO -200 lbs, crt wgt

The day I was released from the hospital part of my diet instructions were
if i cojuldn't gag the shake down, just get a tablespoon of peanut butter
and lick it like a sucker for the protein. Fortunately, i havent had any
problem with it. (yet)

I had peanut butter a couple of times pretty early, like 2nd or 3rd week.
I'd just lick some off a spoon. The last time I tried it, about week 5 or
6 I found that what I tasted the most was the fat and I have always bought
reduced fat Jiff. I can't even imagine how regular peanut butter would
have tasted. The peanut taste was good but the consistency was grease. I
have since bought the natural peanut butter but have yet to open it and
try. One of these days. While the taste is good the protein is on the low
side when you look at how many carbs are in it.

Reduced fat peanut butter on reduced fat wheat thins was one of the first
things I could tolerate. A staple of my early weeks.

I am 11 months post op and it's only been the past couple of months that I
could eat peanut butter without dumping. The regular peanut butter had too
much fat so I dumped on the fat and the reduced fat had too much sugar so
then I dumped on the sugar. Now I can have a 1/2 tbs on a 1/2 slice of
toasted whole grain bread and do fine with it.

Peter Pan makes a really good low sugar/low sodium peanut butter. (yellow
label) It's one of the best I've had, including the "natural' types
like Smucker's. Those are a bit too thick for me. I eat my PB on high
fiber/low carb crackers that I buy from the healthfood store, with a dab of
Polander All Fruit spread, or on thinly sliced apple. Some times if I
really want 'something' I just eat a big teaspoon full of peanut butter
right out of the jar then hav a cup of hot coffee or tea.
Enjoy in moderation.
