Question:
2 weeks post-op and low on protein
I am almost 2 weeks post-op and am finding it extremely difficult getting in my recommended 60-70 oz of protein daily. I am on full liquids now and will be able to move up to soft foods next week ... please help! — Laurie C. (posted on April 5, 2003)

Hi
I am a pre-op so I certainly don't have experience yet (though I will very
soon!). I have read that people add non-fat dry milk to their drinks to
add protein. A lot of people buy protein drinks, some of which have 40g in
each serving (you could split the serving into 2 separate servings). Good
luck to you!

The only way that i could get my protein in at 2 weeks was with protein
shakes. As soon as I started drinking them I started to feel so much
better. I am 2 1/2 months post op, down 55 pounds and have never hit a
plateau. I am convinced that my steady protein intake is to credit. I drink
Real Meals but there are many on the market. Try to find one that is whey
protein. It is the most absorbable kind. Good Luck.

First off, relax. It is very unusual for anyone to be able to get in 60
grams of protein at only 2 weeks out. Do the best you can. You'll be able
to increase as time goes on until you can get all the recommended protein
and water.

I've used protein drinks since Day 7. Most of the good powders will shake
up easily in 4 oz water. They taste good, smooth, and help with appetite
& volume control later down the road.

Relax right now hydration is more important than protein. In time you will
be able to get more in.

I am 2 wks. post op too and I have found a protein shake that is great!!!!
It is Pure Pro by ABB. I like the Smooth Chocolate. I get mine at GNC. They
will order them by the case if you like them. They have 35g of protein and
no sugar. you can get a Gold Card and save 20 % the first week of every
month.

Hey there! I have a suggestion for you. Try Carnation Instant Breakfast.
Directions: 1 packet of No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast w/ 1 8
oz. glass of skim milk and add a 1/4 of a packet of non fat dry milk. The
taste is not too bad. I still drink one of these a few times a week when I
just don't feel I can get in what I need. Good luck! 9 wks post op 46
pounds and counting!

Real Meals is really easy for early post ops. It has 60 grams of protein
plus onver 40 other vitamins and minerals. Because it has the most protein
of any other product made you only have to drink two mini shakes per day.
Also it is one of the few products made that has 100% whey protein plus the
whey peptides which ensures that it is absorbed 100% immediately. I have
been taking Real Meals since I was was about three or four weeks post op.
