Question:
ANOTHER PROTEIN SHAKE QUESTION
Must I supplement with protein shakes even though my diet consists of protein and some veggies? (no carbs except from veggies) — Kelly* P. (posted on March 31, 2003)

According to my nutritionist, you don't have to supplement with protein
shakes/bars if you get in at least 60g of protein through food sources.
Others on there are going to swear by their shakes, bars, etc. Although I
do use a Detour or U-Turn bar as a meal replacement on occasion, it is a
matter of convenience more than preferring the bar over food...JR

How many grams of protein are you getting in via food? If you seem to be
getting in enough, and you're sure you're absorbing most of it (a question
only time and your labs will answer), you may not "need" protein
shakes or other supplements. I use protein shakes because I just don't
like protein food *that* much (I eat about 60 grams of it a day, and take
in another 60 grams or so in shakes). And now that I'm trying to maintain
my weight at goal, I don't want my day stuffed with carb grams to make up
the difference, because I lose control over my eating when I have too many
carbs (it just makes me hungrier to eat too many of them). To each his
own!

I found that in the beginning my shakes (Real Meals) were the only way that
I could get my protein to at least 60 grams. I am now closer to 80-90 grams
per day and if I skip the shake I notice the difference. I have less
energy.
Other people will say no, that you don't but I am out 10 weeks and down 54
pounds with no plateaus so I stick to what works for me. I also have read
so many profiles and the people who have the greatest success are the ones
getting all of their protein and water. Good Luck!
