Question:
I have a friend who really wants to have the WLS, but only has one kidney.
Have you or do you know of someone who has had the sugery sucessfully with one kidney. She's really scared to go through this. She has several health problems and I'm afraid if she doesn't have the surgery (and take the risk) her health problems will end her life anyway. Thanks — gincblake (posted on March 25, 2003)

Some patients aree having kidney problems pre op. As long as she is stable
I believe it will be OK, just like lots of other health problems. She might
have to shop around for a surgeon who takes on higher risk patients like my
surgeon. He does 1,100 patients revisions and others that many surgeons
pass on.

I had an Open RNY this past September and I have only one Kidney. I was
diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma 2 years ago, and they took my one
kidney, adrenal gland, and a rib. This surgery was my saving grace.
Otherwise my Blood pressure would still be elevated which harms the one
kidney I have left. If your friend wants to go for it, then by all means
tell her to go. The only thing they made sure of is that I was kept
hydrated. I have had no complications and down 115lbs.
