Question:
Thought I would give Real Meals a whirl why do I feel like I'm having a hot flash...

Thought I would give those Real Meal shakes a whirl prior to surgery in 2 weeks, evertime I have tried them, they make me break out into a sweat and I get dizzy. What up with those Real Meals, I've heard good things about them. Did this happen to anyone else, it feels like I'm having a hot flash. — Heather S. (posted on March 14, 2003)

Did you mix it with water or milk? If you used milk you could have dumped or you have become lactose intolerant. Milk has alot of sugar. 1 pint of nonfat milk contains 12 grams of sugar. I never connected milk with sugar until I was post-op and on a look-out for sugars.
Take Care, Be Well, Be Happy!

I ordered samples of Real Meals and didn't like them at all. Too gritty for me. I mixed them with milk. I did find a powder that I liked. It's called Body Fortress Whey Protein. One scoop is 17g of protein to be mixed with 1/3 cup of water or skim milk. I use 10 oz of milk with 2 scoops and get in 34 g of protein. I also use the pre-made Atkins shakes. Chocolate is the only flavor I can tolerate in any of these protein products. I found the Body Fortress powder at Vitamin World. I don't think they sell it on their website, though. Good luck!!

Wow, Heather, this is a new one -- John's questions are good ones, since some people dump on protein shakes when sugars are added (even if they just come from milk or fruit added). I've heard of some people dumping on them just with water, too -- I've never used Real Meals, but I've heard of that happening once in awhile with other brands, too. What's weird here is that you're still a pre-op! (Do you feel special, dumping *before* surgery?)
Seriously, maybe it's an allergic reaction to something. I'd suggest trying some samples of other brands, too, to see what happens. I think Real Meals is a whey protein, so you might try a variety of samples that are other whey proteins, or soy protein-based shakes, or egg-protein shakes (oh, blech...I have one I use as a backup, it ain't my favorite, but that option *is* there) ... Anyhow, if you've got some sort of allergy, it'd be good to identify it before you're a post-op!

real meals contain artifical sugar. i am allergic to artifical sugars and they make me break out in a sweat, get shaky, feel nausous, have cramps, a terrible headache then the diahrrea starts!!! perhaps you are allergic to the artifical sugars in it as well. i think real meals has quite a high amount of it, thats why they are well liked becasue they are sweet. good luck to you

I take Real Meals along with a lot of other people I know. I never heard that one. Give it a day and try it again see if the same thing happens.

I would wait and try these things when you are post-op. I had major taste changes and tolerance changes post-op. I do drink Real Meals everyday now but had a huge problem with them initially. The made me sick to my stomach and feel generally sick all over. I later discovered it was not the Real Meals altogether it was the flavor that I had chosen. I could no longer tolerate anything chocolate flavored and when I switched to vanilla all was fine and has been ever since! Good Luck! By the way I can tolerate chocolate flavoring now at 2 months post op. I t is amazing how things change so much!! :)

Pre-op I bought samples from www.vitalady.com . For $1.99 each sample you can try all different flavors and types of protein. I'm post-op now and some taste terrible. I just bought a 5 gal tub of chocolate peanut butter SciFi protein (plus I add a tablespoon of low fat peanut butter for extra yumminess and protein). I never knew 5 gal was SO BIG! I'm gonna be drinking it for life (not really but seems that way!). I've heard the GNC also sells different proteins, at a higher price than vitalady.com or www.wlssuccess.com, but they give a guarantee that if you don't like it you can return it for a full refund. On the milk topic, I never use milk in my shakes, due to the added sugar. We post-op's absorb sugar, so it's like taking the sugar and applying it directly to your hips. Water Water Water! Use ice to thicken if thinness is a problem. Good Luck!

Heather, I think Darlene made a valid point in mentioning adding ice to help thicken the drinks. It is surprising to me that this isn't mentioned more often and wonder if there is a problem with crushed ice post-op. I would think it wouldn't matter, but perhaps it does. I am still pre-op and I give you credit for trying these things ahead of time. I have put it off because so many have said their tastes changed dramatically post-op. I'm going to look into GNC (because of their guarantee) until I know what I like/tolerate. After that, I'll order from one of the websites. Good luck!

I got terrible headaches and slight shakes with Real Meals. The take is horrible at first and gets worse afterwards. I couldn't finish them, I have half a case left. I can't even choke the stuff down.
