Question:
does ice cause gas?

I am 11 days post lap. gastric bypass. my physician has only allowed me water and 60cc ensure per day. also, he will not allow me to eat ice or drink from a straw. he says these cause excessive gas. has any one else heard this?    — John C. (posted on March 10, 2003)

I know the straw is a no no for WLS patients. You swallow too much air with them. I was ok with ice. Do what your doctor tells you to do. You trusted him/her with your life in surgery--so trust him to know what is best for you after WLS

I have heard of the straw causing excessive air going into your pouch but never heard of the ice thing. I would listen to what your doc says though, I'm sure he has a reason for it.

YES, anything you swallow a lot with, will cause gas. Hard candy, cough drops, etc. It's because your taking in air each time you swallow. Straws are the same becaue you have to suck up the air to get to the drink and each time is that much more air.

It could be the high sugar intake causing the gas, too.

Yep, SAN Z is right. It's called "aerophagia" and it can happen with ice easily. Even though ice chips seem harmless afer surgery, they can cause a real problem with gas and bloating.
