Question:
is this diet correct?
I am 8 days post lap. gastric bypass. my surgeon says to only have 60cc of ensure 3 times per day and sip on water throughout the day. that's it, no other anything. He says this will change after 2 weeks. is this normal? — John C. (posted on March 7, 2003)

There are almost as many different post-op eating plans as their are
doctors who do WLS. If that's what your doctor says you should be doing,
it's probably best to just do that. I'm not saying that any one plan is
right or wrong here, but if you do have something go wrong, you don't want
the surgeon to blame it on the fact that you weren't doing what he told you
to do. Also, in the first few weeks, the most important thing is not
necessarily protein, it's staying hydrated. You'll be able to move on to
other things soon enough.

How do you feel? I would think a steady diet of 6 oz of sugar a day would
make you feel rather lethargic and non-motivated. Do you feel ok? Or are
you starting to become lightheaded or have muscle cramping or anything like
that?

Hi John, ofcourse we are supposed to follow our surgeon's diets, but I
haven't really heard much about being told to drink ensure, I've really
heard more against it. It's loaded with sugar, and there are far better
ways to get in protein and fluids than that. I would just be concerned
about dumping with that. Many diets immediately following are liquids, so
pureed foods, soups, protein drinks, milk, soft cereals like oatmeal, even
yogurt and soft foods. But you should usually follow what your surgeon
says, unless it makes you feel sick or you strongly disagree. Every surgeon
has a different opinion, so they can't all be right! Goodluck to you!
