Question:
IS 110 CENTIMETERS BYPASSED ENOUGH?
Went to the doctor today and found out that I only had 110 cm. bypassed. I've been a very slow loser, only 19lbs. in 6 weeks, could this be why I'm losing slowly or is 110 cm enough? — Kelly* P. (posted on March 4, 2003)

Hi, I'm still pre-op (March 13 is my date) but I've been on this site since
August. My surgeon only bypasses 75cm and from what I've read in my
research, 75 - to 100 cm is fairly standard. Also, from what I have
gleened from following people on this site, weight loss is very individual
and people loose at their own pace. Secondly, if you are really losing
slowly even while following your Drs. diet, I would contact your
nutritionist and have them take a look at your water and protien intake.
It could be that you are not taking in enough. Many people have posted
that not taking in enough is often a cause of slow loss. Best of luck and
congratulations on 19 lbs. That's really fantatstic, no matter what!

110 is enough. See the profile of John Rushton...he has done incredibly
well and had only 75 cm bypassed. I was told that 100 cm.=about15%
malabsorbtion and that fat is LESS malabsorbed than most nutrients. The
big issue is that we eat way less food and make better choices. Get in at
least 64 oz of liquid, get the protein grams your Dr. set for you, wait
about an hour after eating to drink. Start walking to burn extra calories.
Watch fat, carb, and sugar consumption. Everyone loses at different
rates. Also to be considered is that you could have extra weight from
swelling, water retention ect. I came out of the hospital weighing MORE
than I did when I went in. Also your body is in shock from the major change
it just went through, it will need time to catch up. Also, your metabolism
may have had a shut down and gone into starvation mode. Your weight loss
will pick up. If you are really concerned, talk to your surgeon, he can
run tests and make sure all is well on the inside. Be patient(easier said
than done, I know!)it'll happen.

im not trying to be flippant here , but lets think abotu this, have you
ever been on any diet where you lost 19 lbs in 6 week ? , right now, this
is not a big concern , if it is, then by all means talk to your dr, and
like any other person losign weight, write a journal of what and when you
eat/drink, you may be able to see the problems in your own , or , you will
at least have it there to talk with the nutrionist , right?
best of luck , 19 lbs is a great start!

The amount bypassed has nothing to do with the slow pace of losing. Some
just lose quicker than others, but we all lose, and you will too. Don't
despair. I had exactly 110 cm bypassed and have lost 95 pounds in a year.
My doctor does all his surgeries at 110 centimeters. One of his other
patients has lost 150 in a year and a half.
