Question:
ANYONE SLOW LOSER, BUT DID WELL?

I know I'm only 2 1/2 weeks out but I've only lost 7 lbs. I keep reading about everyone losing 20lbs. in two weeks. Is there anyone out there that was slow loser like me but then thing kicked in and you started losing quicker?    — Kelly* P. (posted on February 5, 2003)

Hello! I'm a slow loser, but I started out pretty fast. I weighed 374 the morning of surgery and at three weeks post-op, weighed 347. At 9 months out I'm down around 160lbs while many others have far surpassed me. Fast isn't the objective, getting the weight off for good is! You're doing GREAT!

Kelly, stop right now. You will drive yourself bonkers if you try to compare your weight loss to others, even those who start at the same height/weight as you. We all lose differently, but the key here is that we all lose. At 2 1/2 weeks post-op, you haven't been post op long enough to say that you are a slow loser! Just be patient, stick to the doctor supervised diet, exercise when you can, drink tons of water and the weight will continue to come off. There are tons of slow losers on her who lose slow and steady. And others that drop alot and then plateau for a while, then drop again. Like I said, we all lose differently, but we all lose.

Amen Cindy! PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE save yourself a LOT of heartache and grief. Do NOT compare yourself to others. The sooner you stop doing that, the sooner you will have success...your OWN success!!!!

Count me in. I had open RNY on 1/8/03, and as of my one month visit had only lost 15 pounds. The larger a person is, the faster they'll lose. I'm one of my surgeon's smaller patients, so I'll lose slower than someone bigger. Just keep doing what you're doing, and stay off the scale. It's very hard not to compare yourself to others, but every body is different. Everybody and every body. Hang in there!!!

You're not supposed to stop losing weight until 12-18 months post op. So, don't compare yourself to others and try to focus on the whole picture (I know it's hard & I still do it too)!

You are talking to the queen of plateaus here. I am going to reach my 1 yr mark and am just 2.5lbs from 100 total since the day of surgery last year on 2/28/02. Considering that I lost 15 lbs pre-op, starting out at 313, 100 lbs doesn't sound like a lot and it has come off so slowly there were times I actually thought I may never reach goal. Fact is, I may not. Not everyone makes it, but that doesn't mean you can't. You are in the early stages right now where your weight loss will be easier and faster than say in 10 months. Take full advantage of this time and don't fret about the amount you are losing. Even when you aren't losing weight you are still losing inches. And, you may hit plateaus here and there. Just don't give up on yourself!
