Question:
Am I eating too much or is my pouch too big?

I'm 2 1/2 weeks out and I'm doing pretty good. I haven't thrown up anything yet. Liquids were fine, pureed was fine. Now I'm eating things like finely chopped chicken salad, cheese, eggs, and I tried some shrimp with a little butter lastnight. My portion for the chicken salad was about 1/4 cup. I had about 2 oz. of shrimp. Then for lunch today I had about 3oz. of chicken. This seems like alot of food for so early on. I thought I would eat 2 bites and be stuffed from this surgery. But it seems like I can eat a decent amount of food. I do find it difficult to figure out sometimes when I'm full. My concern is, is my pouch to big or does this sound about right? And I am kinda curious why I haven't had any problems with throwing up, maybe I just haven't overstuffed myself yet? I'm also worried because I've only lost 7lbs. in two weeks. Other people lose 20 lbs. in two weeks.    — Kelly* P. (posted on February 5, 2003)

Kelly, every surgoen is different and so is the corresponding Nutritionist. With that being said, I had to wait 3 full weeks to switch to Non-pureed foods. Your amounts are fine, but, keep in mind your tummy/pouch may still be swollen...Be carful with the shrimp, although I have never had a problem, others have b/c I have heard shrimp expands in your tummy like rice. Also, I think fullnes is more related to texture than amounts. Good Luck! Heather (Open RNY 8/15 - 305/214/150)

Kelly, I am one week post op and was on liquids last week. I was told to only eat 1/2 oz, so I did. I was never really hungry. From now on I am suppose to eat Chicken, fish, shrimp, turkey and leafy vegatables only. And these in portions of 1/2 oz for the first 3 months. It's really not anything, but I figure as long as I am not hungry then that is fine. I am 27 and I weighed 350 post op. I was down to 334 on the day of surgery as my surgeon instructed and I am down another 21 lbs today. I wish you luck, but I have heard pure proteins speed up weight loss and to stay clear away from all dairy, mayonaise ext. My diet will consist of a slice of turkey in the morning and lunches will be either salad with no fat Italian or grilled chicked or boiled shrimp. I know this will get old, but I am going to try my best. My surgeon has completed 500+ of the RNY procedure and he really seems to know what to do and what not to do. He advised that after the first week or so, my weight loos should be 7-8 lbs a week for 6 months then taper off to 5-6 lbs. My best advise is to eat as little as possible and try to eat only proteins and leafy veggies. See if this doesn't help you in the weight loss. Leslie
