Question:
Does everyone get drainage tubes?

I am going to have an open RNY, my doctor did not mention me having tubes after surgery. Is this only a lap thing or pretty much all types end up with them?    — Sarahlicious (posted on January 31, 2003)

I had my RNY on dec 13,2002 and I had my drainage tube in for about 3 days, you really can't feel it when the tuibe is in but when they pull it out its the strangest feeling you will ever have LOL, its kinda like have a string pulled out of you thats wrapped around your body, it doesn't hurt or anything it's just strange, you will understand if you get one. -45 lbs in 7 weeks :o)

Hi, it will depend on your surgeon. My surgeon only does lap procedures, and to the best of my knowledge none of her patients have had drainage tubes. It's definitely something you need to ask your surgeon before your big day. Good luck!

Open RNY - I had 3 tubes. 2 were taken out before I left the hospital 3 days post op and the last one was taken out 1.5 weeks post op at his office.

I had open RNY and had 3 tubes. 2 were removed in the hospital the other stayed in for 21 days which was the usual practice for my surgical group. I HATED it but my dr's reasoning seemed valid.

I had open RNY and no tubes. I did have two IV catheters that were inserted in my lower abdomen below the incision and they were attached to a little pouch that provided and intraabdominal infusion of a pain killer (lidocaine) and an antibiotic. This solution was basically infused into my abdominal cavity and 'bathed' all my organs/intestines in this solution. I had no special bowel prep and this apparently reduced the pain and chance of infection. They pulled the IV catheters out before I left the hospital and it didn't hurt one bit.
