Question:
Anyone nausious with protein drinks?
Hi everyone. I just got home today (surgery 12/16/02) and this is my first day on Carnation Instant Breakfast. I couldn't stand the taste of that so I switched to another brand which tastes much better. However, even with little sips, it makes me nausious and seems to hit my stomach like a lead brick, which makes me more nausious. All the while, I feel like I'm really hungry. What is up with this??? — lgrace42 (posted on December 19, 2002)

I could not tolerate protein drinks of any kind. All of them got me very
sick and diarrhea hit hard. I too had the hunger feeling but I think it
was false hunger and more irritation from the stomach. I can drink the
sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast but mixed only with soy milk. By
the way all of the protein drinks I have tried were sugar free. I'm 6
months post-op and now I can get my protein in other ways. In the
beginning I could eat cottage cheese with in the 2-3rd week that is loaded
with protein. If this become too bothersome call your Dr. ASAP. Good Luck
on your new life and congrats on the surgery!

Is it the sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast? There are two kinds.
Souble check the sugar grams on the other brand too, you didn't say which
one. You could be experiencing your first dumping if it has sugar.

My doctor had me wait a week to try the Carnation Instant Breakfast drink.
Like the others said, make sure it is sugar free, start with 1/2 or 1 scoop
of the protein. I'm currently using a non flavored designer protein. My
first day I expeienced stomach problems and have visited the toliet
frequently this afternoon. Like they say, we are training our stomach all
over again.

It might be the milk. Milk + CIB = a hugue wad of sugar. Many of us become
lactose intolerant postie. You might try a real protein drink that is very,
very low in sugar (under 6g for 30g protein) that you can make in water.
Tasty, non-fattening.

My doctor prohibited anything but CLEAR liquids for the first 2 weeks.
This meant SF Jell-o, SF popsicles, broth and tons of water. After the
second week, I could add very thin cream of wheat, yogurt, thin mashed
pototes(instant were recommnended). It maybe that your pouch is still to
tender to handle anything that is not clear. My doctor also said not to
worry about protein for the few few weeks until everything had healed and
then he preferred us to eat our protein rather than use supplements. I've
never done any supplements to get my protein. I just eat a lot of chicken,
fish and sometimes pork. I also became lactose intolerant early on so I
don't eat cheese or other dairy. Still, my hair loss was too bad and has
come back in. I've lost 140 lbs and down to 112. I'm 18 months post-op
and happy as can be. Try just clear liquids for a few more days and see
how it goes.
