Question:
Has any one tried Gerber baby food when traveling to make things easier?

I will be traveling during the summer which will be about 2 months after surgery. Because I camp, I had thought that taking along baby food such as the fruits, it would be easier. Just wondering if any one has tried some of the baby foods and juices that are out there, sugar is not added, so it is natural. — Darlene D. (posted on November 27, 2002)

Hi!
I looked into baby food right after surgery, but for the most part, the protein counts were pretty low, so I didn't try it much. The "Graduate" type ones were at least ok tastewise... but the regular, totally pureed ones were nasty. Also, the protein counts in the "fruit" ones were the same as the "Main Course" ones (3 grams or so?).
By two months out (depending on what your surgeon says, of course), you should be able to eat most regular foods, and hopefully wouldn't need the baby food?
Good luck!
Kelly

I have home daycare and let me tell you I will starve before I ever eat baby food. I am 5 wks out and have been on solids for 1 wk. I have heard beef jerky is high in protein, can you eat that? Also the canned Vienna sausages. At 2 mo out you may be able to eat canned Hormel chilli with beans, just pick put the beef. I assure you there will be something out there besides baby food "yuk". Best wishes.

I tried baby food in my "puree" stage post-op and it was flat-out nasty. I would suggest taking along things like nuts, string cheese, and protein bars instead.

You can take underwood deviled ham and chicken with crackers. Tuna pouches, beanie wienies, etc. Do not resort to baby food. Yuck!

I feel like a terrible mother that I ever fed that stuff to my kids! I tried it right after surgery, it is terrible. I went camping for two weeks at about two months post op. By then I was eating all normal foods. While we were camping, I got chunky soups, beef stew, chili, beef jerkey, cereal, lunchables, regular fruits, nuts (I went through this time I craved nuts and sunflower seeds) And then I drank a protein shake everyday.

I am a big fan of baby food, though only the fruits (not the cobblers or desserts because they have added sugar)! The meats and meat mixtures are awful....I tried warming them, salting, peppering, marjarine.....YUCK! You can do canned tuna and lunch meats and baby food fruits. Good luck!

When I was eating mushy foods for two weeks I ate baby food some of the time. I thought most of it was good! None of it had added sugar. I didn't try any of the meats though so the protein counts were very low. The fruits are great and I especially liked the sweet potatoes and peas for vegetables.

Darlene..at 2 mos out you should be on solids. Eating any form of mushy, runny type foods are going to "cheat your pouch" and you'll end up taking in more calories (your tummy will not stay full). I agree with the rest of the posters. Go for the solid adult foods!! =)
