Question:
Has anyone else had a liver biopsy during their RNY?
During my pre-op interview the Doctor was talking to me about the long term effects on the liver from losing weight to quickly. He said thay have seen quite a few cases with severe liver complications that can result in death. This totally freaked me out. — Cindy S. (posted on October 13, 2002)

My surgeon did a liver biopsy only as a precaution to make sure it was ok
while he was in there. Everything was fine. It is just a precaution..Don't
panic unless you have to!! Good luck on your surgery..

Relax. My surgeon says fatty livers are helped immensely by weight loss. I
had the biopsy too and they asked to do another one post op a year to check
for long term improvements. That.. well I passed. Sounds unpleasant! Fatty
livers cause all sorts of troubles I think you miss understood what your
surgeon said. Its possible to slow the loss by grazing but I never heard a
surgeon sggest that. FAST loss is best for most co morbidities.

I was told the liver can heal itself if cared for. The kidneys cannot. I
had the biopsy also..all is now fine. Are you on any hypertension meds?
Sometimes these can "fry" the liver ..(my words) sorry. But thank
heavens that after surgery we usually do so much better with all the
insides!!!

If you read my profile on here, it gives more details. I had my liver
biopsies during my RNY and again during my panniculectomy one year later.
As far as my blood labs go, all is so much better now! I have been at goal
wt. for months now & losing 176 pounds as cured most of what ailed me
