Question:
Is my weight loss ok?
I went to a Doc in the box the other day for an ear infection and I told him I had a RNY. He asked how much I had lost and I told him 80 lbs. He said "Is that all". I did think I was doing alright but now I am wondering. I started out at 297 lb. am 5' 1" and am now about 218 lbs. Can I get some feedback re: if this is typical weight loss or was that doc right in thinking I should have lost more. — Daphne S. (posted on August 12, 2002)

Everyone is different. You don't say how long ago you had surgery. 80
lbs. is great, period! Don't get depressed about the numbers. If you're
more than a year post-op your weight loss will slow way down, but you can
keep it going by remembering the rules and exercising. Look up the pouch
rules for dummies...it's a great reminder. I eat 6 small meals a day,
exercise 4-6 times a week and drink tons of water...I down to losing just
1-2 lbs per month, but I'm still losing...dont fret, just stay steady on
the course.

IS THAT ALL?? What kind of question is that? Most docs would be thrilled
spitless with a loss of 25# in 5 months. What is he THINKING? From my
experience, you are right on target. Keep doing what you're doing &
don't let The Great Unknowing scare you from sticking with it!

You are doing great! Remember, not all doctors are overly knowledgeable
about weight loss surgery and how long it actually takes us to lose the
weight. So keep on losing and feeling good about yourself! :o)

good work!!

To be frank, if he was much of a dr he wouldn't be working in a
doc-in-the-box. Don't worry about it. You are doing super! You don't want
to lose too much too fast or you will be a puddle of skin that doesn't know
what to do with itself. LOL Wonder why that dr isn't working in a real
practice? HMMMM maybe his patient interaction skills?

Honey, My SURGEON fusses about my weight loss. Sometimes, I think they
would be much better off keeping their big mouth shut. It is a
possibility that he was trying to motivate, but frankly that kind of
motivation stinks. You are doing super, so keep up whatever you are doing
because it is working well for ya.

The doctor sounds like an idiot. Every doctor I've went to since my
surgery (surgeon, ENT, PCP and plastic surgeon) have all raved about my
weight loss. I'm harder on myself then they are. The key thing to
remember is a lot of people lose weight but if you check them again in 6
months, they've probably put it back on and then some. So how good is
that??!!

Daphne - sounds to me like that doctor is secretly harboring resentment
toward bariatric surgery (and not hiding it very well I might add). YOU
know you are doing well, it sounds like you knew that before talking to
that jerk. Don't doubt yourself and your success because of ANYONE'S
comments...that includes misinformed, uninformed or biased medical
personnel. Just because he is a doctor does not mean he is God! YOU GO
GIRL! :) (((HUGS))) - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -49lbs.

We had surgery the same day (3/5/02) and I've lost 85 lbs to date (started
at 270) and my surgeon, my chiropractor and my PCP all think I'm doing
beautifully. And I have to agree with them. Yes, it would be great to
wake up tomorrow and be a size 6, but hey, I didn't wake up one day a size
24 either. Don't give the guy the satisfaction of getting to you. When in
your life have you lost 80 lbs in 5 months? Congrats and just enjoy the
ride! Kathy
