Question:
Dr. Michael B. Butler at Palms of Pasadena Hospital?
If anyone has used Dr. Butler, I would really like to know how you came out and what you thought of him. I've received some information from the Department of Health on his history and am a bit confused. — Robin S. (posted on August 6, 2002)

I had my surgery 10/24/01. I have lost 126 pounds and have not had one
problem. I can honestly say Dr Butler saved my life and I would do it all
again.

I have heard conflicting stories on Dr. Butler. I'm sure there are many
people who are very happy with Dr. Butler, but I know I would not trust him
with my surgery. Only because he was blasted on the front page of the St.
Petersburg Times (Sunday edition). This was about a month and a half ago.
He was stated as being careless about postoperative care and has had
several deaths related to bariatric surgery. I guess he is under
investigation as to whether or not they should take away his medical
license. You should go to the library and read the article. It was on the
front page. I was very shocked as I was originally planning on consulting
with him regarding surgery. I am so glad I went through Dr. Marema's group
in Ft. Lauderdale.

I first went to dr. butler for my consult. I was very unhappy with his
professional manner. He averted my questions and his office staff made
three large mistakes reguarding their info I was give(or lack thereof). I
feel it is a personal choice but I switched to a different surgeon because
of my incident. Good luck

I used Dr Butler and found him and his staff to be very warm and friendly.
I experienced excellent pre and post op teaching and support. I personally
had a wonderful experience with him and still trust him completely. Dr.
Butler accepts patients for surgery that other surgeons turn down as being
too great of a surgical risks and I think the sensationalized article in
the paper was a bum rap. I have lost 107lbs and wouldn't trade him for
anything. Statistically,I wonder what other surgeon's mortality rate are
and how it compares. Interestingly enough, I didn't see that information
in the article. It all really boils down to who are you comfortable with.
I wouldn't go to anyone that I didn't feel I could talk to and who wouldn't
listen to me. Only you can make your choice with who that surgeon is.
Good luck in you journey.
