Question:
I'm gaining weight

Okay, I'm 2 1/2 years post op, I've gained 25-30 pounds, I only have a BM about once a week and I burp constantly. I can take Milk of Magnesia everynight and go every 2-3 days. I'm drinking over 64 oz a day. I can only eat a little at a time (one sandwich), but an hour later my stomach is growling again. During all this, I am burping. I really haven't changed my eating habits, I haven't eaten or drinken anything with sugar since the day before my surgery. I'm really depressed about this and can't figure it out. I cut out almost all my carbs for a month and gained 1/2 a pound. Has this happened to anyone else and what can I do about it? Thanks, Gayle    — Gayle G. (posted on July 5, 2002)

Well i am not post-op yet but I have an idea....My nurse's daughter had surgery and she had a plateau after a few months. Well she (the nurse) also had surgery a few years ago and told her to make a journal of her food and liquid intake for a week and to be honest. Well she kept seeing 1 glass of orange juice like 3 times a day. Well her daughter though it was healthy there is alot of sugar so she told her daughter to cut the OJ out of her diet. The next week she lost 7 lbs and is no longer in a plateau. So there is something that you may be eating that you think is good but may not be. I hope this might help.

Have you lost all of your weight?? If not I'd recommend doing proteins, veggies and water only for a month and see if that doesn't kick start you. Lay off the sandwiches and wrap your fillings in lettuce leaves. Take an OTC stools softner and avoid starches like bread and pasta like the plague. Also, if you're not doing so, start exercising asap. This is the the time when the body gets used to less food and wants to hold on to the weight. gotta use more calories with excercise than what you are taking in.
