Question:
Does anyone know of any surgeons MD, VA, or Washington, D.C. ?
I am having a problem trying to find BCBS Carefirst/FEP Preferred Provider surgeons to perform gastric bypass surgery (lap/open). Can anyone help me? — blank first name B. (posted on July 1, 2002)

you can e-mail me with your e-mail address and I can give you names of some
of the docs in the area that I know about (DC and MD). Also, your insurance
company should be able to give you surgeons names also.

I highly recommend Dr. Osvaldo Anez in Fairfax, Va. He also does surgery
in the Woodbridge area (Prince William County, Va.). You can call his
office : (703) 860-8101. His staff are some of the nicest people on earth.
He does Open RNY only, however. Good Luck !

Hi. I chose Dr. Bruce Schirmer at the University of Virginia Hospital in
Charlottesville Va. He is a master at his trade. He teaches the surgery
at the University. I didn't have one single complication. He was born to
perform this surgery. One word of advice. If you chose him, hold out for
HIM. Don't settle for one of his "partners" who may have less
experience, even if you have to wait it out a little longer, it will be
worth it.

I love my surgeon Dr Gary Harrington of Richmond, VA. He is a pioneer in
the Lap RNY procedure and soooo knowledgable. He is very calming with a
great bedside manner. My surgery and recovery was a breeze! His office
number is (804) 285-3225. Good luck!

I'm not sure if your BCBS will accept these surgeons, but here are some
from a resource I've been provided with (by the way, these are for the
Lap-gasric bypass; they MAY also do open:
Virginia: Eric DeMaria, [email protected]
Harvey Sugerman, [email protected]
John M. Kellum, [email protected] ~~~~~~These three surgeons care with:
Virginia Commonwealth University
Medical College of Virginia Campus
P.O. Box 980519
Richmond, VA 23298-0519
(804) 827-0045 (Dr. DeMaria)
(804) 828-7874 (Main Office)
Also try: Bruce Schirmer, M.D., University of Virginia
Charlottesville, VA (804) 924-2104 & David Spencer, M.D. Portsmouth
Naval Hospital-Portsmouth, VA (Dr. Spencer restricts his service to Tricare
and military patients).
My resource didn't have any listed for DC or MD, but if you would check
with this website under "Find a Doc", you may find a few from
those states you mentioned. Just be sure to check with your particular
insurance carrier to be sure they are in your network. I chose one out of
my network-that was just my preference, but keep in mind if you go out of
network, be ready to deal with the financial consequences.

My surgeon, Dr. Denis Halmi, is in Fairfax, VA and Woodbridge, VA. He is
fabulous. I am so happy and know several of his other patients and they
are also happy. His partner is Dr. Osvaldo Anez and I've heard good things
about him too. My incision is only three inches long for open surgery!
Another doctor in Fairfax is Dr. William Roll, but since he didn't accept
my insurance, I never met with him and cannot tell you whether he is good
or not. Please e-mail me if you need more information about my doctors or
want to discuss this. Good luck!

Dr. Barry Greene did my lap rny on 6/13 (301-593-3930) at Holy Cross
Hospital. Dr. William Marcus does the BPD (open). Support group for both
doctors is 2nd and 4th Wednesday at Holy Cross Auditorium at 6:30 PM.
