Question:
Can I replace sugar with Nutra sweet?
I know sugar is very irratating after surgery and I wanted to know if a sugar substitute would be allowed. Any info. would be great. — Melissa S. (posted on June 20, 2002)

Sugar substitutes are OK although some people get headaches from
nutrasweet. My favorite is Splenda (sucralose... made from sugar but
without the carbs/calories). It comes in the little packets, and also in a
form that measures the same as sugar so you can bake w/ it.

Sure you can! I replaced mine with Splenda. I was going through around 3
big boxes a month. Then I was finding I could tolerate more and more REAL
SUGAR. And it was also getting so I wanted to eat and eat and eat.... when
I was'nt even hungry. My pouch would hurt and I still wanted to shove food
in. I know carbohydrates do this to me, but I had no idea sugar subs can
too. I found it out at http://www.carbohydrateaddicts.com/
Anyway now that I cut way down on Splenda, I can't tolerate sugar very well
again (YES!!!) and gone are the "eat till you puke" thing I was
going through. So becareful with any sugar sub. I still cook with Splenda,
however I've now gone back to real sugar in my coffee. Seems the sugar subs
just set me off on eating binges.

It isn't so much that sugar makes you feel miserable, it can completely
reverse your surgery, as in total regain! Sugar subs are very helpful in
staying away from sugar permanently. Sweet 'n Low, Equal, Splenda
(sucralose), SugarLike, NatraTaste, Sugar Twin, stevia (& a dozen
more!) can all be helpful in keeping you safe from the effects of syugar,
both dumping and regain.

I've heard that the sugar substitutes - Nutrasweet, Sweet 'N Low, etc.
actually contribute to overeating. I use only Splenda now and it works
fine for me.
