Question:
I have been rading about hair loss..dumping(what is that)...sounds scary
is the surgery worth all the side effects? I am trying to get so much info before I make this life altering decision. — dixieb (posted on June 4, 2002)

Not to sound rough- but the hair loss is rather superficial. People often
lose it during Cemotheraphy, yet we do not question Cemo's validity. It
grows back, and usually we don't lose it ALL like the people who have Cemo-
we lose about half. When we suffer from hairloss, it is a temporary issue,
and the hair grows back in. It starts around 3 mos. and continues till
about 6 mos. It should be the least of your concerns. Dumping is when you
eat certain foods (some that you shouldn't) and your body does not tolerate
it, it makes you feel ill for about 30min- 1hr. It goes away. Like
hairloss it does not have a lasting affect on your body. Meaning, it too
is temporary. It is not always caused by bad foods, it is just how your
body is feeling that day. Happens more with foods high is sugar or fat-
basically the two foods we try and avoid. Some types of this surgery
(correct me if I am wrong) do not expirience the dumping. If this scares
you, perhaps looks into a surgery that doesn't cause you to dump. Thing
is, I dumped so much before surgery, what I expirienced afterwards was no
biggie! I also had enough hair for eight people, so losing mine- never
really sent me into much shock. It was shocking, but I saw no bald spots,
and I did not take any pills/treatments for it.

I suggest checking the library for "dumping" and/or
"dump". There should be some descriptions there. Sugar seems to
one of the main things people dump on, and I've read that duping can cause
sweating, heart racing, and extreme nausea. It's good to see that you want
to be as informed as possible before making your decision. Best of luck to
you!

hairloss is usually caused by not enough protein, but can be prevented by
eating protein and drinking protein shakes and drinks, as well as using
shampoos to strengthen and prevent hairloss, so i hear. Dumping is often
caused by sugars and sweets and is felt for 15-40 minutes, basically
overall crappiness, nausea, diarhea, dizziness, upset stomach, can get some
symptoms, can get all, just depends. hope this helps.
