Question:
I would like to speak to someone who's had the gastro plasty.
I'm getting the surgery, but everyone on here has had the bypass. I would like to see the results on someone who's had the plasty. If you're out there, please drop me a line. Thanks!! — Melissa S. (posted on June 4, 2002)

WRONG!! There are tons of us on here who have had
VBG (very successfully!)
In my case, my VBG was last June (2001), and I've lost a total of 146 lbs.
I've gone from size 30 to size 14, and two weeks ago, I had an extended
Abdominoplasty. I feel GREAT!, eat whatever I want (within my 800-1000
calorie a day limit) and life is good!!

Hi Melissa,
I had open VBG 2/5/02 and I am doing great. I have lost 61.5lbs coming from
278. I have not had any complications. I feel very good and am glad I had
the procedure. I have not been disappointed at all. Any questions feel free
to contact me at [email protected].

I had gastroplasy in May of 1986. I had no complications, a fairly easy
recovery and lost weight quite quickly. Unfortunately, it didn't stay off.
I have talked with numerous people who had surgery around the time I did
and they said the same thing. It worked initially, but in the long run the
weight went back on. Now, its also been 16 years, so maybe things are done
differently. I had no support group, no one to tell me what I should eat
and how and the surgeon left the area about 7 months after I had my
surgery. I am now in the process of having the bypass.

WRONG.????? We all have our opinions
I also had gastroplasty done 15 years ago and the weight flew off. but it
didn't stay off. I'd say after 5 years of being normal weight the weight
started to come back on.
It may work for some but not for all. I think the real test is the LONG
TERM WEIGHT LOSS one acheives.

My "WRONG!!" was in response to the questioner stating that
"everyone on here has had the bypass". That is not the case. It
had nothing to do with opinions. And, if you will note, her question did
not ask about "opinions" regarding different procedures. She
asked to hear from gastroplasty people. That's all. Therefore, what does
"Wrong???" and "everyone has opinions" have to do with
anything here in this particular question/answer??

Cathy J. I'm not a mind reader! Perhaps in the future you might clarify
what your WRONG means.
I believe this topic has become boring

Melissa, research everything you can. Look into long term results so you
won't be seeking a revision.

I had VBG done in April of 1992. I lost 120lbs, but in the last year
regained all plus 20. In the beginning, I was dedicated and excersized
regualarly. I was also young and foolish. I am an emotional eater.
Eventually, as times got tough or whatever, I began to eat again. Slowly
but surely the weight came back. With VBG you can stretch your stomach
back and in alot of cases the sutures come out. You also do not experience
"dumping syndrome" and therefore you can eat tons of sugar if you
want. After my 3rd child, I developed a sweet tooth and gained 70 lbs
since he was born in March 2000. I am now in the process of a revision.
Just make sure you know yourself and you options. Any ?'s

Melissa,
I had VBG in 1992. I lost 80-90 pounds in about a year. But, like many of
those who've responded I can my weight back plus an extra 50-60 pounds. I
just had my VBG revised with a Open RNY on 4/10/02 and have lost 46 pounds
in 7 weeks. My advice to you would be to research options thoroughly.

I've been very happy with my VBG. I'm 2 years post op. You can be
successful with ANY of the procedures, and you can be unsuccessful with ANY
of the procedures. None of them are a "cure-all". They all
require you to work at it to keep the weight off long term.. you can't go
back to eating the old ways and maintain a loss. Remember that not
everyone who has RNY has dumping, many of those post ops tolerate sugar as
easily as they did preop. There are pros and cons to EACH procedure. And
the procedure that is WORKING for YOU is always going to be the BEST
procedure for YOU. I wish you the best of luck with whatever direction you
go!
