Question:
My stomach can't handle protein...help

I am 4 and 1/2 weeks out of open RNY..I have lost 26lbs. but haven't lost anything for a week. My stomach can't handle protein shakes, proteinex, or protein bars. I try and try and all they do is come back up. What can I do for protein? I eat about 4 small meals a day but I know that the most protein I am getting in is maybe 20 grams a day if that. I am afraid that this lack of protein is going to cause me to stop lossing..What can I do?    — Debbie S. (posted on April 25, 2002)

How about cottage cheese? Just a half cup will give you between 12 and 14 grams of protein depending on what brand you get. Have you tried mixing your protein supplement into food items? We used to make a box of sf pudding according to the directions, then add a scoop of protein powder to it and whisk it really good. Finally add a "glop" of Cool Whip Lite or Free and whisk till smooth. It is like a mousse and totally delicious. Or you can do the same with sf lite yogurt. I made some of that for my support group this past meeting and they loved it. It is like having dessert and you are getting a full serving of protein.

Hi: I had the same problem..not one protein drink or bar would stay down. I did can fat free refried beans with cheese melted into them...just a bite at a time.Took me 2 hours to eat a 1/2 cup but I did it...15 gr.protein. Egg Salad did well with me,lots of protein, creme soups did well for a long time with me,hot tea with part milk soothed my tummy really well and the milk got about 10gr in for the day...if you need any other suggestions you can e mail me at [email protected] I would be glad to give you some helpful hints....

Try Isopure - it's a protein drink that is water based and you can buy it at GNC. It has 40 grams of protein in a 20 ounce bottle. It's a little expensive (about $3.50 per bottle) but it tastes sort of like crystal light. It is much easier to get down than the kinds you have to mix up. I didn't tolerate those either! Good luck.
