Question:
Anyone have their Gallbladder remove after WLS?

Hi all, I just had tests confirm I have Gallstones. I am 13 weeks post-op(Rny). The surgeon doesn't do the Lap procedure and will probably go through my RNY scar. Has anyone had this done and what will my scar look like? How many inches will I be opened up? Is the recover hard? I am really bummed out because I am really feeling good right now and doing alot. This gallbladder is very painful and I want it out. Will I be able to eat better? Like meat?? Will I be able to sleep on my stomach after surgery?? How long were you in the hospital? Thanks..........    — Laura G. (posted on March 21, 2002)

I just had mine out on March 1st. (I had an Open RNY on 5-8-01). I had a rotator cuff done at the same time as the gallbladder. I was very surprised he could do it LAP! My arm shoulder hurt so bad that I did'nt have any discomfort from the gallbladder one. The only discomfort from the LAP gallbladder (have four tiny holes) is that the one hurts (but only occassionally) like a pea trying to pop out. But it might not hurt, however I have to wear a tight arm brace that goes around my waist and it puts alot of presure on that spot. I have'nt had to change anything food wise since the surgery and I don't have any weird bowel problems ether. In fact, I'd never know I had the surgery. And it would have been an outpatient proceedure had I not had to stay a day in the hospital for the arm/shoulder surgery. The LAP gallbladder is a piece of cake.

I haven't had WLS yet, but I did have open gall bladder removal about a year and a half ago. I'll tell you this. The five pre-op days, during the one and only acute attack I had, were so bad, I was begging for the surgery to take it out. In comparison, the post-op period was a breeze. I had it out on a Friday and went back to work 2 weeks and 3 days later. The extra day was Labor Day.
