Question:
I can eat 1/2 of a small (kid size) burger, it takes me about 20 miutes.

I usually save the other 1/2 and eat it later. about 3-4 hours later. Is this an ok practice or should I just throw the other 1/2 away? I also will do this w/ 1 slice of pizza. Eat 1/2 and 1/2 another 3-4 hours later. I am 3 months post op. I don't eat these things every day, but when I have to eat out fast food.    — Cindee A. (posted on March 11, 2002)

hi..i would personally throw the left over burger away as you have a chance of getting e-coli bacteria which you can get from eating any form of mince burger patti if it goes cold or isnt cooked properly... i am 3 months and 1 week post op and i am having diffuculty eating anything as i am a vegatarin and alot of things are making me dump so i cant help you with the volume thing .im having enough trouble gauging the fat and sugar...

I've had the same problem with burgers being too big, and feeling like I was throwing away too much when out. What I found was that I'll order the kids burger and take the bottom part of the bun off and eat it open faced---I get more of the beef I'm craving & protein, and less of the white bread filling me up!

You can't get e-coli from a cold or room termperature hamburger... you get it from an improperly cooked burger. First, the meat has to have the bacteria, then, if not cooked fully (which kills the bacteria) you MIGHT get sick, but whether you eat it "hot" off the grill, or a few hours later will NOT be the determining factor. You can feel safe keeping your leftovers for later.

I think what you mean is this: is it okay to eat a fattening mean twice in one or two days? I am pre-op still, but I don't see why it would be a problem as long as you don't do this very often. It would be a shame to waste the food.

my honey & i eat out ALOT! hey...we live in las vegas lol. if he wants fast food we go to wendy's so i can have chili. mostly tho we eat in restaurants. i generally share whatever he orders but on the occasion that i know i will want something he will not eat, i take along a tupperware type container to put my leftover food in. if, after a few days i have not eaten it, i toss it in the garbage.

I think the thing you've got to try and avoid here is having a meal every 3-4 hours. You may as well eat the whole slice of pizza and then wait 6-8 hrs. for your next meal. Make sense? This practice of eating fattening foods throughout the day is known as "grazing," and it can stop your weight loss in its tracks. If it's done only once in a while, it's probably harmless, but I wouldn't make it a habit.

I would throw the other half away!!! Who says we have to eat everything on our plates? Isn't that the way we got to be obese in the first place? I can just hear my mother and father saying: "You can't leave the table until your plate is clean!!" Can anyone relate to this?

Throw it away! Why would you want to eat the same thing at each meal. My concern wouldn't be so much with the nutritional value (I eat happy meals and pizza sometimes, too), but just with the variety of food. I will eat out sometimes, but I usually buy something inexpensive that I can throw away. The exception is that sometimes I'll buy a ham/cheese/spinach calzone and eat part for lunch that day, eat something different for dinner, and the rest of the calzone the following day.

Another thing... it is perfectly okay to eat every 3-4 hours. My nutritionist recommends three meals a day with two snacks and not waiting more than 4 hours between meals. If you wait too long you tend to eat more. Protein-filled snacks (yogurt, cheese & crackers, etc.) keep your blood sugar at a steady level.

Throw it away!! Don't let the old guilt trips of "there are starving children in China" that are parents burned in to us guide your decisions anymore. There is also a health factor, e-coli may not be a problem but anytime a food remains between 40 - 130 degrees bacteria grows and the only way to kill it is to re-heat to 165 degrees. Leaving it in your purse is very dangerous. E-coli is not the only deadly form of bacteria out there. If you must save it, refrigerate right away and reheat to 165 degrees before you eat it. I must say my dogs have been very happy since my surgery, they get half of almost everything I fix for myself because my eyes have not yet adjusted to my stomach.
