Question:
more saugar preop less likely to dump post op???

hi...i was wonderingas i have never been a sweet lover..my downfall was hot stodgy foods.. if you ate alot of sugar preop does this make your body less partial to dump on lower sugar per meal than someone like me who didnt have high sugar intake....it may be a silly question but i was just wondering...    — Rachel F. It's the altered stomach and intestines in rny that causes dumping. It wouldn't matter if you lived only on sugar before, you could still dump after. Not all rny patients dump. Distal (more intestine removed) has a greater chance of dumping than proximal. You can also start out dumping then train your body to accept certain foods over a period of time. I'm not sure what you mean by stodgy foods, but I dump on fried food. If I eat a pc of fried chicken or catfish or any fries or anything deep fried I get the nastiest yucky feeling for about 45 min, then the runs. Good luck

Hmm ... that's an interesting concept. I, too, was a huge sugar eater pre-op, and I have not been a dumper post op, unless I go crazy and eat way too much sugar. Nowadays, I can eat a small candy bar or a few chocolates without dumping, but anything more than about 500 sugar calories at a single sitting gives me MAJOR diarrhea, plus I feel guilty because I've been "bad." It's so ironic to me, because I used to easily eat 3,000 calories in straight sugar before my surgery. And now I feel bad about 500!!!

I don't think it matters what you ate before surgery but I just wanted to give you a bit of valuable advise. Once you give up sugar after your surgery, never, ever, let it back into your life. It's a bad, bad thing that your body doesn't need.

I agree with anonymous...if you break from refined sugar after surgery or even before, don't go back to it. Its not something that adds anything nutrition-wise and has no healthy benefits. Its so much easier not to eat it when you totally avoid it then it is to limit the amounts. Well, thats probably not true for everyone, but it definitely is for me. I am a much calmer person without sugar in my diet, plus it helps with my weight loss to skip it altogether.

I was not a sweet eater, either. I was butter & salt pre-op. Sugar cravings ran over me like a truck about 20-22 months post. FORTUNATELY, I have dumped with low levels of sugar all along. The very rare sugars I ate before now were no longer annual treats! Also, I had to go back to label reading 101 and learn to do serving sizes vs sugar g, etc. Dumping when you are willful & stupid is one thing, dumping because you can't read a label, well, it's just embarrassing!

i was a very big sugar eater all my life, right up to surgery. now i dump big time on sugar & have to be very careful about my food's sugar content because the smallest amount makes me dump.
