Question:
Any milk drinkers out there?

Iam a 6 week post-op. I have been a milk drinker all my life. I can't believe how depressed Iam from not bein able to drink a glass of milk. My family drink 2% milk which has 14 grams of sugar. I bought a quart of whole milk because it has 11 grams of sugar!!! How can that be?? I haven't drank any yet from a glass. I did eat two bites of cereal in milk and then I stopped. Too scared to eat more and nothing happen. Also, I have been snacking on watermelon and cucummbers. They are so easy to chew and swallow but then I immediately get the diarreaha and intestines sound like a running water big time. No pain really. Is this dummping? Should I drink a small glass of milk and see what happens? I am not going to do anything until I hear a few answers on this.    — Laura G. (posted on February 2, 2002)

I used to drink milk all the time! I loved it and I still do. I can drink milk fine no dumping or anything. I usally drink 2%. It does have protine, thats a plus! Sometimes I use the carnation instant breakfast in it sometimes I use the sugar free choc. milk mix. But I don't do it all the time, to many carbs! But it is yummy!

Funny, I was always a milk drinker before surgery (only skim milk) and continued to drink lots of it immediately after, but again only skim. Lately, however, drinking a glass of milk doesn't do much for me. I'm 13 months post-op and this just started recently. Although I still drink plenty of milk, I have to have it in my protein shake or mixed with instant breakfast or on cereal or something. I still drink quite a bit though, and it doesn't bother me at all.

MILK DOES THE BODY GOOD! My surgeon says life is A LOT easiser if you like milk. I am 11 days post op and have been drinking A LOT since day 7. Doctor encourages it, but reminds you to drink skim 1/2% or 1% the rest contain too much fat and may cause dumping...the sugar is just milk sugar or lactose and has nothing to do with your sugar intake... CHEERS!

I am 17 months post-op and hadn't had much milk at all until recently. I took a look at what I am eating and realized that I may not be getting enough protein. I decided to add a glass of milk every day or so to get a little extra protein at the same time as getting a liquid. I started slow with a couple ounces and have worked my way up to about 3/4 of a cup. I feel a little funny if I drink more than that at one time. I would say start slow with maybe a half of a small glass and see how you feel. If you tolerate it great. If not, at least you'll know. I could see how watermelon could make you dump because of the sugar in it but cucumber doesn't have sugar. If it doesn't agree with you lay off it for a while and try it again to see if it happens again.

One of the things that I have learned during the past 17 months is that everyone loses weight differently and everyone reacts to food differently. I have been one of the very blessed ones. I can eat or drink small amounts of absolutely anything. I have milk in my cereal a few days a week. It has never bothered me. All you can do it try it and see. :) I had a very distal RNY. I have lost 329 pounds and am 5 grand a glorious pounds from goal. If I crave something I just try it. The only thing that I have difficulty with is rice. It doenst hurt me it just feels really heavy when I eat it.

The subject of milk usually causes a heated debate, I'm surprised that those that don't advocate milk haven't shown up. I personally believe that anything in small amounts is fine. Some believe that the sugar in milk will cause you to plateau. But those who don't drink milk plateau also and I have noticed that those who do drink milk still lose their weight. So really I don't see a problem with it. I drink it, have it in my milk and am losing superbly being a lightweight. My nutritionist recommends it also. If you have no problems with it, I say drink up. BTW, cucumbers give my intestines a run for their money, always causes lots of gas and cramps for me. Enjoy your journey!!

'have it in my milk' means the cereal.

I haven't had any problems drinking milk (I'm 3.5 weeks post-op). Although I drink it with ice now, since it takes longer to drink and I need my milk COLD. I had been relying on it for a lot of my protein, but I read in the library yesterday that we don't absorb the protein from milk! Oh NO! I have to do some more reading on that, but just thought I'd mention it. It was news to me. Anyway, everyone's body reacts differently to everything. Go ahead, try a little bit, and see if your tummy accepts it- this is a game of trial and error for all of us. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that we didn't have this surgery to deny ourselves EVERYTHING forvever- especially something 'healthy' like milk. Good Luck! :-)

HI! Pre-op, I loved milk and drank it all the time. At the advice of my nutritionist, I switched to skim milk and I know it's a head trick, but as long as I drank it in a cup and didn't actually see how watery it looked, I could drink it (or in cereal) but I couldn't drink it from a clear glass. But post-op, the only way I consume milk is with my oatmeal, mixed in w/my soups, in my coffee, etc. I buy my milk half a gallon at time, used to buy it by the gallons, and I am finding myself throwing away more milk than I actually drink -- or if the date is going bad I mix it in my dog's food. Same thing with bread. I used to love it, now I end up WANTING it in the house, cause that's the American way, you gotta have a load of bread in the house, but I always end up throwing the entire loaf out to the birds, or strays. The animals in the neighborhood have really benefited from my WLS!

I LOVE milk, but unfortunately it no longer loves me :(. Pre-op I loved skim milk and had shredded wheat for breakfast every morning. I really miss it. I don't think that I am "officially" lactose intolerant, but when I have a few bites of ice cream, or drink just a little milk, I get the worst smelling gas imaginable!! It really is bad. So, for the sake of the ozone(LOL) and my need for friends, I skip the milk. I am hoping that one day it gets better, but if not, it was a good sacrifice for losing 141 pounds and to wear a size 6!! I was not a big milk drinker pre-op, but since my surgery, I have been a big milk drinker. I do not dump on it. And I try and drink 16 ozs of it per day---it's full of protein and calcium. And while we malabsorb these, our body does get something from it. I'm very happy with my loss so far...eleven weeks out and almost 60#'s gone (I'm a lightweight) If the milk doesn't cause you to dump, by all means, it does a body good.

Pre Op I liked 1% milk. Then Post Op I found it to sweet for my taste. I tried Skim which is awful! Now I get "RICH SKIM MILK". Anyway if you want to try milk and are scared to, then I suggest this. Do "NOT" drink a cup (or glass) of milk! Instead try one or two tablespoons and wait an hour or so. If it does not bother you, try 1/4 cup or so. If you only try a tablespoon or so and it bothers you then you will be glad you did'nt drink a cup! If it does'nt bother you then increase the amount. I "think" most of us are lucky and milk does'nt bother us. Then some of us are not so lucky. Good luck to you!

Hello I have no problem with 1% milk, also I drink Silk Soy milk. I tried to dump, just to get the feeling. I will not try that again. Smile Keep the faith, and iff it don't work try something else and keep in touch by posting your questions. Martin

I loved Milk Preop. I could drink a half gallon at a time. Okay so that is an exageration, but you get the point. I loved the stuff, and the 3rd day Postop I was allowed milk with my food. it worked well in my oatmeal, but when I tried to drink it I threw up. About a week, and a half Post op I tried again, and immediately threw it back up. I have not tried since. I really miss being able to guzzle that Silky smooth, creamy moo juice. Now I am thirsty...
